Tiny NSV

My gym has been holding contests weekly this month, and I finally entered one to see who could hold a lateral raise the longest (holding a dumbbell in each hand, above shoulder, out to the side, as long as possible).

I won for the females, with 2 minutes 5 seconds, which got me a month of free membership.

Small, but it meant a lot to me.

    That's pretty awesome.

And now I'm curious how long I could do it.

How much weight did you hold?

It was only 2kg per hand, but my gosh was it harder than it looked.
The girls got 2kg weights, the guys got 4kg.
I mean, I have done some heavy lifting, so I was quite surprised at how difficult it is to hold them aloft for just a few minutes.

That sounds hard! But you've inspired me. I'm going to see what I can do this morning.

Yep, by the end, I literally could not keep my arms up, they sort of went all rigid and then that was that. It is deceptively difficult. I was walking about and moving to try and distract myself. I managed longer than quite a few of the guys actually, but then they had the 4kg. I reckon I could still have outdone a few of them if I had gone for the 4kg though, but then I would not have won for the females. When I was told I had to beat 2 minutes, that was it, I was determined. I am VERY competitive. Had I kept up my boxing this year, and the heavier weight training, I probably could have managed longer.

Not being able to feel your arms for the rest of your life isn't a good thing!

I just tried it. 2 minutes, 25 seconds with 2 pounds in each hand. At about the 45 second mark, I realized that this was going to be much harder than I'd thought.

Nice one. I had 2kg dumbbells which is about 4.4 Ibs each.
