Finally ran a 5k outdoors

So I have been running a 5k on a treadmill a few times a week but finally today I manage it outside.

My fastest on a treadmill is 37mins. Today (outside) my time was 43mins, including a few mins of walking. As a beginner are these times ok?

My speed outside tends to be between 4-5 mph, my fastest is 6.3 mph. It seems so much slower outside.

Yes times are good for a beginner.
Outside is slower-you are working harder. The ground-even pavement-is more uneven than the treadmill. You need to pay more attention to placing your feet and to where you are going. You are always going slightly uphill or slightly downhill.
    Keep up the good work!

Your times on a treadmill will always be faster than outside. Well done on running a 5k outdoors its certainly a lot different from running indoors must admit I don't like treadmills much rather be outside running. You now have a time that you can work on and even a few seconds off that time is a major achievement, well done you are doing really well.

    So exciting right?

I am trying to run a 5 k by June and can run 1.5 miles on a treadmill. I tried to run out side a couple of weeks ago and couldn't even make it a half mile . My excuses are that it was cold and of course there's still snow on the ground. But I know I'll keep trying . I was shocked with how much harder it was though:blushing:

    Great job !!

Yeah that sounds great! I just did my first unofficial 5K today usually I just go for 30 min and stop today I pushed through and it took 39 minutes. I started training with c25k outside though so I think it helps when you start outside.

I used to be like that, I couldn't even run 1k at the beginning of the year, as soon as I needed to walk I gave up, now I walk a little then run/jog again.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Can't wait till I move to the coast and can go running along the beach front

These comments are having me smh. As you improve your times outside are always faster than on a treadmill. I realize you run at a very modest pace, but I know of no one who is an experienced runner who runs faster inside than out. I easily run 7:40-8:00 min pace on most training days but it takes me a long time before I can get near that on the hated treadmill. I've asked others and they all say the same thing.

Get outside people. Unless its 20 degrees, you should be outside.

Everyone is different. For some people, running outdoors is easier, for others running on a treadmill is easier. Speaking for myself, I did c25k indoors on a treadmill and, maybe for that reason, I can run a lot faster on a treadmill than I can outside. Where I live, it's cold and icy on the sidewalks all winter so unfortunately I'm stuck indoors until the snow melts.

^^ This has been my experience. I started training this winter on my treadmill and started running outside two weeks ago. On my first run outside I was about 1 mph faster than treadmill and now averaging about 1.5 mph faster without really trying to. Interesting how people have different results. If I try to do my outside speed on the treadmill I feel like my legs are going warp speed. It's weird.

    :flowerforyou: :drinker: Awesome!

Just wait until you get get used to being outside and you first notice your times start getting faster than on the treadmill! I'm about 3 minutes faster over a 5k outside than on the stinkin' dreadmill!
