Sneezing after running

So I am new to running, well that isn't totally true. I am the proud Mom of a son currently at college on a XC and Track Scholarship! But I am new to being the one running and not yelling at him to go faster :) I am about 96 days into my new life and I would really like to do a 5k with my son in late fall after his XC is done. At Christmas I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. My sons told me enough, that I was too good a Mom to lose and they were not going to let me go on anymore the way i was. They cleaned out my cabinets and left me with strict instruction to report daily on my progress!! They are the best! With a supportive husband I am down 62 pounds (monitored by a doctor) and eating very healthy and exercising at least 5x a week. My problem, I sneeze uncontrollably after I try and run!! I am currently walking for a ways, then jogging for a ways and so on. This never happens with my indoor workouts (kickboxing, circuit, etc). I don't think it is allergies because in the evenings I go for less intense walks with my husband and I am fine. Nose spray before and after seem to help but sometimes it can go on for the whole day! I have googled this and it does seem to happen to some people something they think about antihistamine levels??...
Has anyone else experienced this? I want to continue but honestly it makes me feel awful, the sneezes are so intense I end up with a headache and it can really just ruin the whole rest of the day.
Thank you all very much! Sorry the long intro!!!

Happens to me all the time but after I get used to my new activity level I'm OK
  • This happens to me too... in fact, it's happening right now!

We are literally allergic to exercise. Intense cardio makes some people's bodies release an abundance of histamine. The best thing you can do is take a Zyrtec an hour before you plan to run. It's easier to prevent than treat!

I'm getting back into running after more than a year, and forgot about this before I ran in my neighborhood today. I had itchy hives on my arms before I even got home (this is a new symptom for me). I was sad, thinking I run so slowly that mosquitoes can land on me while I'm running; but when I got inside that "shoving needles up my nose" sensation started and I realized what it was. It is debilitating and awful.

Tomorrow I'm taking my Zyrtec and adding a nasal spray an hour before I run- it helped tremendously in the past. By the way, the medical term for what we have is Exercise-Induced Rhinitis. Good luck, I hope it gets better for you!

It doesn't happen to me after running but it can happen to me brutally after a really intense metabolic conditioning CrossFit workout. After one of the workouts in this year's CrossFit Games Open, I sneezed for 18 hours after. Next time we had a similarly hard workout, sneezed again. It's called "exercise-induced rhinitis" and it's annoying as heck.

I have not had it in a few weeks today but today we are doing a workout that is one of the hardest metabolic conditioning workouts and I bet it will happen again!

Thank you, it helps to know I am not the only one. The nasal spray before and after seem to help and now its allergy season and I am taking claritin on a regular basis.
