exercises for a bad back?

I've been struggling with a bad back for years...herniated disc and spasms that stiffen up my lower body. This has been a particularly bad week as I'm still learning to remember to engage my core muscles every time I bend. I had to leave a Shred class yesterday after a spasm. :( I try to continue with my lifting program and my cardio, paying careful attention to my form. I also do yoga once a week and go to physio (I have a couple of take-home exercises). Any exercise programs out there that people recommend for bad backs? Hoping to add a short routine...looking for a DVD or an online stream specifically to address this...can be pilates too. Thanks!

This is something I struggle with as well.
I was in a terrible car wreck in 2013 and to put it simply I have all sorts of lower back problems now.
As for a specific routine, I don't have any (and would love to know some as well), but I'm trying focus more on core exercises as I've heard that it helps with back issues especially if the problem is in the lumber/sacrum region. Most of the core exercises I do are in the standing up position (occasionally with a weighted medicine ball) and on a stability ball if I have to get on my back.
I'm also going to start weight lifting again and hopefully that'll help strengthen the muscles in my back (along with accessory muscles that help support it), but trying to take it slow.
It's tough, it really is. I hate that my back issues hold me back from my full potential, but I'm really hoping it gets better with time and doing these exercises.
