Tomato-less Pasta Sauce?

Does anyone know of any tomato-less pasta sauces? I'm allergic to tomatoes, and have been looking for substitutes all over the place. I'm not really fond of making my own with plums, but if worse comes to worse, I might have to try it.

I'm just tired of plain old noodles with spices on them, trying to make them taste better than they are. I wonder if I could have a tomatillo... Anyway, does anyone know of any tomato-less sauce products, or know any good-tasting tomato-less sauce recipes they could share?

Edit: I'm also allergic to cow dairy: cheeses, and most pesto.

There are a gazillion variations on alfredo sauce (just stay away from the blush sauces that contain tomato). In addition you might want to try your pasta al olio - with olive oil, sauteed garlic, and if you like a bit of parm sprinkled on top (that's my favourite). I'm not allergic to tomatoes but they do trigger bad migraines in me, so as much as it kills me, I can't have my mother's fabulous tomato-and-meat spaghetti sauce. Have had to learn to like other options.

Can you eat pesto? That's another option for dolloping on your noodles :)

    Good luck!

I'm allergic to cherry tomatoes, but not regular tomatoes because the juice on the inside is different.
So, depending on what happens when you eat tomatoes you might want to try a tomatillo.

If you decide to go with Alfredo sauce make sure to watch the cals/fat in there.
    Good Luck :flowerforyou:

I'm also allergic to cow dairy! But thanks. There's dairy in most pesto as well.

Thanks katschy, but also, see my dairy allergy and pesto comment above. The oil and garlic sounds yummy though.

Jenks... You're right, I'm not gonna die if I eat it, so I might try a tomatillo. Do you know of any brands that sell a sauce made from it? I don't know if I could make a decent one myself... If not, I'll have to Google some recipes.

aprilgicker... That sounds good! Thanks! Do you just add up the ingredients, and puree until smooth?

championnfl... No, I haven't tried that, thanks! Sounds like a lot of variation! I might skip the clam sauce though. I love ACV!

Try a creamy mushroom based one....make a basic mushroom soup and add what spices you prefer. I like a garlic mushroom sauce over spaghetti or tagliatelle. Cayenne works well with it as do crushed black peppercorns

Thanks, but there's milk in mushroom soup as well. :frown: I will take your suggestion of spices though!

you can always make your own pesto and leave out the cheese.......olive oil, basil, oregano, pine nuts...etc....goolge pesto and just omit cheese.

if pine nuts are insanely expensive...which they tend to be 17-18 a pound....sunflower seeds are great substitute

I puree the oil and pepper together, then add the the diced onions and spices. I like flake spices or fresh for cold sauce. Ground spice for hot food. The peppers will have a sweet flavor so make sure the spice matches. parsley, basil, rosemary, thyme, or dill for the adventurous. Don't forget the garlic!

google is your friend, search for recipes.... i love www.foodgawker.com

you can make your own pesto, there's no need to have dairy in there... just basil, olive oil, garlic, and pine nuts if you wish, done in the food processor.

you can find alfredo recipes that call for using tofu or cauliflower

spaghetti alla carbonara creates a sauce using egg (some recipes call for some sort of milk or cream but it's not necessary)

    there are roasted pepper sauces

    sauces using pureed squash

you just have to take the time to look :) good luck!
