10 weeks until wedding... 12 pounds left!

Hi guys! I apologize if this posting is in the wrong place, but I'm looking for some encouragement.

I started running last June at 180 lbs, I am down to 152 lbs. and I am getting married in 10 weeks. My goal is 140.

Do you guys think I can manage 12 lbs in 10 weeks? I run and spin 4 times a week, burning on average 600-700 calories each session. I meet my calorie goal just about everyday, with a day off on the weekend so I can have family dinner.

I am thinking of adding some weights to my routine, but I don't want to gain any weight, I just want to lose! What do you guys think? I did weights on Saturday but I must have overdone it because I could not move over the rest of the weekend and I'm still hurting today. I couldn't even steer the car without excruciating pain :(

You gotta lift. At the very least pick up a kettlebell at Target, or a sporting goods store. You'll be sore at first, and if you can't even get into and out of the car, you went too hard too fast on the first day. Up the protein, up the fat, lower the carbs, watch the sodium, get enough sleep, drink plenty of water, and put some resistance on your body. You'll be fine!

    Congrats on the wedding :)

Lifting won't cause you to gain weight unless you are building muscle, which you won't do if you are eating a deficit. You might retain a little water for the first couple of weeks as you get used to it, but that will settle down. Cardio is great for burning calories, but lifting is what is going to get you the body you want.

140 is just a number. Add some weight training in there, and things will tone up. If your dress fits and you feel awesome that day, then it really shouldn't matter if your scale says 140 or 145 that day. Keep up what you've found to work so far, and enjoy your wedding day. I'm guessing since you've worked on losing weight for your wedding, your soon to be spouse proposed because they love you and want to be with you for life, not because they want you to be X number on your wedding day.

Have cake, have fun, and worse case, grab a pair of spanxs :)

Is there a dress size you are trying to fit in? Why does the number matter so much??

I say this because if you start lifting you might gain some weight, but you will lose inches. So you will be smaller. But in all honesty if you lift for 10 weeks there probably wont be any significant gains weight wise, but the scale miiight slow down a little bit. I still highly suggest lifting because it speeds up fat loss, I just say switch to a measureing tape and toss your scale.
  • I'm trying to fit into a size 8. 140 was the weight I maintained through most of my twenties and the weight I was when I was a size 8.

Have you tried the dress on? I found that wedding dresses run small anyway. If your goal is a wedding dress size 8, that could be more like trying to fit into a size 6 or smaller.

I'm back to a weight I hadn't seen in a few years, but I didn't exercise either when I was this weight before. Parts are way more toned up now, and easily 2 sizes smaller than I would have been before.

    Definitely lift!

The added muscle will help you burn more calories at rest. Plus it'll make you more toned (aka less flabby!!) I used to be a complete cardio junkie until I got a personal trainer and went on a lifting program. Never thought my body could look like it did after just 3 months - plus set a personal record for lowest body fat percentage. Do a search on the difference between 5lbs of muscle vs 5lbs of fat... you'll see a great picture that says it all!!

Long story short, last year I quit the gym, quit lifting, and only stuck to cardio... And my body returned to flab mode. AGH. But, just joined personal training sessions again to get me back on track!!

I'd recommend drinking a gallon of water per day, performing HIIT, and going heavy especially on legs. Noteworthy for the future: the quads are the biggest muscle group in the body and a tough lower body workout is like doing cardio, but you actually end up burning more calories throughout the day afterwards.

    And, finally... Congratulations!
