My friend has been doing this weight loss program with me and has done extremely well. She has already lost 25 lbs since January and was trying to lose at least 35 pounds. HOWEVER, she just found out she is pregnant. She is still overweight (weighs 175 lbs). She hasn't been in to see her doctor yet, so I thought maybe I could ask you folks. Is it okay for her to still limit her calories. She has limited her exercise as physically she hasn't been feeling up to it. She doesnt' think she will need to gain much weight with this pregnancy as she already has a lot of weight on her. I don't know what to tell her. I thought maybe someone here would know how to continue on her new path without hurting herself or baby. Or does she need to stop now?? Thanks!!

If she's eating healthy and exercising gently (walks around the block, etc.), she should be able to continue on her path. I have a friend that was so overweight that she lost weight with her pregnancy because she was finally eating healthy. That being said, your friend can NOT limit calories. She needs calories to support the baby, and the baby needs calories too. If she is on MFP, she should set her calories to maintenance so that she knows the weight she's gaining is baby. And remind her, the best way to lose weight after the baby is breastfeeding! I lost 20 pounds in 3 weeks just breastfeeding my son.0

ummmmmmm I'm certainly not a dr. but I am almost positive that your friend will still be able to limit/count her calories, BUT she will have to set it higher than it was set pre-pregnancy. She needs to discuss this with her doctor. I have read that very overweight women are not encouraged to gain weight AT ALL during pregnancy (of course I say this without knowing your friends BMI, and I myself at 175 would not be considered VERY overweight) anyway, I have heard of many very overweight/ obese women actually losing pounds in a healthy way during a pregnancy..... BUT I would consult and OBGYN and possible a nutritionist before proceeding :flowerforyou:0

Here are two other posts about being pregnant. I would tell your friend to try babyfit.com. It is similar to this site (food and exercise tracking) but for pregnant women.
I would also talk to her doctor. I lost 25 lbs with my last pregnancy because I was eating well, walking, oh yeah, and throwing up every day!!! But the doctor constantly said that although I lost weight, my belly and the baby measured perfectly. So I lost, but baby gained. I was obese at the time, so that probably makes a difference.
I wouldn't TRY to lose a lot of weight while pregnant, just try not to gain a ton. Then I'd worry about it after I have the baby. The baby is the most important right now, and obviously her body is going to go through a lot.
Congrats to her! :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:0 -
Well, myself always being around that weight when I got pregnant (and my girlfriend is pregnant right now and being around that weight too, she's only gained 7 or 8 pounds and is due in July) I gained too much.
As long as she's eating healthy, the calories should be okay. That's just a myth "eating for two!"
I've also known people exercising all the way up to 8 months. It's actually good for you and the baby to still exercise. Obviously not riding a bike or jumping around too much, but there's nothing wrong with some exercise. Then she'll bounce back much better after having the baby.
(not a dr. Just someone who had 10 & 11 pound babies!)
Good luck to your friend!0 -
Oh, I wanted to say I was so sick (and stopped eating McD's) that I lost 25 lbs during my pregnancy, BUT then gained 10 lbs right at the end. So when I was ready to pop, I was only 15 lbs lighter than when I got pregnant. But I had a lot of extra weight on me, so it didn't affect the baby, and I definitely wasn't doing it on purpose.
Just wanted to make that clear. Congrats again to your friend!0 -
You're supposed to eat an extra 300 calories a day for the baby, so if she just does what she's doing and adds on 300 calories that might be ok. I'm not sure though. I gained 30lbs while pregnant, but then after 1 week I weighed less than I did b4 I got pregnant, so I guess I was one of those overly overweight ppl that I lost weight while pregnant! lol Oh well, it worked for me Seriously though, she should b able to continue, at the very least she can continue eating healthy and exercising, she just may need to eat more.0

You only need an extra 200-300 cal/day when you are pregnant. Unless she has a difficult pregnancy, she can exercise moderately the whole pregnancy. Just have her keep her heart rate under 140 when doing cardio.0

I definitely DON'T think she should cut cals but try not to over-consume either. Tell her to try www.babyfit.com - it is a great website geared towards staying fit during pregnancy. It also has a lot of similaries that MFP has only it for Pregnant women. Tell her congrats!!!0
