Maca Root - increased blood flow - good for lifting and sex

Studies have identified four alkaloids present in maca known to nourish the endocrine system. Maca root has been used as a stress-fighting adaptogen to increase stamina, boost libido and combat fatigue. Maca is a nutrient-dense whole food packed with vitamins, plant sterols as well as many essential minerals, fatty and amino acids. Our maca is cultivated on the Junin Plateau of the Peruvian Andes.

I have it at home, tried adding to foods but it instantly makes everything taste disgusting! lol. I really need to work out another way to eat it. I think it sounds like a beneficial thing to incorporate into my diet...definitely if it does help to reduce pms, regulate hormones, and improve mood and energy.

It's alright in a post workout smoothie with some yogurt, almond milk, raw honey, banana and chia seeds (seems to pair well together) and thats about all I can tolerate.

    Either
    1. Make it into a tea and have a chaser ready (beer, cranberry juice, etc.) Any strong-tasting drink that fills your palate can be used.
    2. Smash it into a powder and fill a gelatin capsule, then swallow with water

Back in the day, I tried both methods to consume Ma Huanggen, which is the root of what we commonly call the ephedra plant. It is absolutely disgusting to eat, but I would add green tea and raspberry leaves and it was ok. For my husband, I would fill gel capsules with powder (spirulina and chlorella at the time) for him to take with his pills. I tried adding them to smoothies and different things, and he couldn't drink it because of the smell/taste.

Blueberries, spinach, kale and quinoa are sometimes referred to as superfoods. We eat those pretty regularly.

Personally, I don't see what makes spinach or kale superior to collard greens, which we also eat regularly.

It does have a distinct taste. I mix mine with water in the morning and chug.

Cheezus, you're hardcore lol. I tried that and there were all these bits in it, so gross!

Superfood is a word that escaped the land of 2am informercials into the real world. Why this was allowed to happen, I do not know.

Haha so true. It's such a *kitten* term.

I don't view some of those so called "super foods" as anything more than a gimmick, unless you are talking about a whole, fresh food. Some people say "super foods" and they mean blueberries or broccoli, and that i get. But a powder is not a super food. Maybe fresh spirulina, chlolera, goji berries, or hemp seeds are good for you, but by the time it's dried out and powdered, it's no longer a fresh food. I think the true "super" foods are fresh, local, in-season produce.

But where do the nutrients go?
    Mexico. They go to Mexico.

Thank God. That's where my veggies come from anyway.

    It is gelatinized, not raw.

I'd deal with raw probably your way.

lol yes I think you're right. And so much of it is going on about the 'Antioxidants' I don't think most people even know what they are, they just think it has to be good so I'll eat it lol.

Some I have heard of that are gaining popularity are:

    Raw Cacao powder
    Cacao nibs
    Coconut oil
    Spirulina
    Chlorophyll
    Acai berries/powder/tablets etc
    Goji berries
    Maqui berries
    Maca
    Chia seeds
    Oats
    Flax seeds
    'Activated' nuts

    Some more here: http://www.doctoroz.com/slideshow/dr-ozs-10-favorite-superfoods?gallery=true

Can't think of any others but I'm sure theres more!

man, I remember the days when spinach, blueberries, and avocados were "superfoods"....guess I'm out of touch...maybe I should stop eating those and start eating some chia or something....

ETA: sarcasm aside, don't worry about whether something is a "superfood" or not...they seem to be ever changing. Just rock your nutrition and rock your fitness and everything else just tends to fall into place accordingly...

Yeah, I was going to say how much I loved sweet potatoes, but I guess they're off the list because .... sugar? ... no clue.

They still taste great. Same with avocado and blueberries.

I have been using Ground Flax seeds and Chia seeds in my green smoothies. I have also done chia seeds in water with ice and lots of fresh squeezed lime juice. I don't really notice a direct effect other than energy from the Chia. =)

"Super foods" are usually foods that are nutrient dense. If they used the term "Nutrient dense foods", it would have less appeal for many because it's associated with going on a diet. And who wants to do that?

Sweet potatoes or yams? As far as I know, yams are still super, because lots of vitamin A and fiber. Sweet potatoes are just a white potato that is sweeter than normal (more evil sugars).

    From The Wiki:

Superfood is a marketing term used to describe foods with supposed health benefits.

The term is not in common use by dietitians and nutrition scientists, many of whom dispute that particular foodstuffs have the health benefits often claimed by advocates of particular superfoods.
