How much sugar do I really need?

MFP has me set up on 24g of sugar per day, I always go over. I don't eat candy, ice cream or large amounts of fruits, etc. If I splurge it's on fat free hot cocoa or peanut butter. My question is though, is a reasonable number to try and stay in.
