Diary of a Compulsive Overeater - Day 16

So, yesterday went not too badly. I am reading a book by Dr. Phil, and i am setting up goals for how i want to change my life etc.
Goals:
Lose 115 pounds by jan. 2010
Lose at a realistic pace of 5 pounds/ month (more if my body is responsive)
Overcome emotional overeating
Discover why i act out my emotions through food and stop that pattern
Get at least 4 hours a week of exercise at a moderate intensity
Maintain weight loss, exercise and healthy eating for the rest of my life.
They seem like good realistic goals. I’ve never really done that before, set out goals that actually made sense. Usually it would be something like “lose 100 pounds by summer” or something ridiculous like that, or “never eat chocolate again”, things that I could not possibly achieve.
So yesterday went pretty well, and i managed not to binge, which i am very happy about. So here is how it all broke down:
Breakfast:
Bacon breakfast bagel with cheese, mayo, tomatoes and egg
1 cup unsweetened apple juice
Snack:
1 orange
22 almonds
Lunch:
Grilled chicken sandwich on foccacia with spinach, red peppers, provolone, and pancetta
Tossed salad with Italian vinaigrette and parmesan cheese
½ slice of tiramisu
Supper:
280g of new York steak
2 cups rice
Mushrooms and onions
Mushroom sauce
I know dinner seems really big, but normally i would have had a steak almost twice the size and even more rice than that, so it is little steps. What i am the most proud of is that i only ate ½ of the dessert i ordered for lunch. Also, when i went out for breakfast, as habit, i bought i giant cookie to have as snack. As the cookie sat in the paper bag on my desk i asked myself, “why did i buy that? i don’t even want it, and i know i shouldn’t eat it”, so you know what i did? I threw it in the garbage. A $4 cookie. Garbage. This was a big step for me. I NEVER throw out perfectly good food, especially yummy and expensive food, but i knew i would rather spend my calories elsewhere. Yay me. Also, i went to the convenience store last night and i walked inside with confidence. I got 3 large mushrooms and 3 bananas. Shocking.
Today is looking like it will be pretty good. We are going out for lunch today, so that is always a struggle, but i will try to make healthy choices. Here is the plan for today:
Breakfast:
1 cup kashi crunch
1 cup skim milk
Mini snack (9:30am):
1 banana
22 almonds (trying to keep myself full so i don’t sit here and fantasize about food all day)
Snack:
1 small yogurt
22 almonds
Mini carrots
Lunch:
Out with the girls somewhere. I am thinking a grilled chicken sandwich and salad, but i’m not sure yet where we are going...
Snack:
Nothing... granola bar if hungry
Supper:
2 small pork loin chops
1 medium-large potato, mashed with skim milk and becel
Large tossed salad with olive oil vinaigrette, tomatoes and cukes
This is my plan. i am going to try to resist any urges i have and focus on the long term goals i have set out for myself. My mini goals for today are:
Drink lots of water
Go for at least a 30 minute walk tonight
Maintain a positive attitude
Order a healthy lunch
Not to obsess about the way i look
Not to binge eat.
Here is to today!

I'm really impressed by your planning, and understanding that you don't need to eat something just because you paid for it. Really important steps!
Which Dr. Phil book are you reading? I read one that I found very good - don't remember the title but it was more about the EMOTIONS behind our food choices, and our eating behaviors.
Good luck with your lunch out with the girls ... I hope that none of them are "feeders." Nothing is more annoying than a girlfriend saying "are you sure you don't want any of this cookie?"
As for the snack, the orange and almonds are a great combination for fiber, protein and natural sweetness. Keep it up and you WILL achieve your goals. :happy:0
