Hi I'm going away for 6 days tomorrow and I know I will be eating and drinking more and some unusual things compared ty normal diet. I will think about my choices more than I usually do but will not be depriving myself of trying new things. Just wondering wat others do re logging when away - do you think it best to keep going or have a rest?

Take a break, relax, and enjoy and play catch up when you get back. Try to get some exercise in though.0

Thanks - I think I generally agree with you. I will probably be walking quite a lot - both for sightseeing and up in the mountains. I find that MFP has made me so much more aware of all my choices too which is good even when not logging - I just don't eat for the sake of it anymore. Had a bit of a day off today too for a lovely meal with family!0

I am going on a cruise in 3 weeks. On the days I want to eat more I will but I won't go over my maintenace limit. I will exercise everyday, too.0

I keep logging. Even if it freaks me out a bit from the higher calorie counts, I tend to be doing tons more walking and activity anyway when I'm not in my normal work routine.0

I plan on hitting the gym every morning then do a lot of walking the rest of the day. Therefore, I am not too worried about gaining any weight during that week. If the Internet fee wasn't so expensive, I would track. I probably end up at my maintenace level most days anyway.0

I always take a break when I'm on holiday, and then have a few days of not eating back any exercise calories when I'm back - I soon get back to my previous weight!
Despite eating more, I'm always more active when I'm away - walking all day exploring the sights, or swimming in the sea ... oh, now I want a holiday!
I am actually going to Rome at the end of May, and I'm trying to get to my goal weight before then so the short counting lapse will act as a kind of trial maintenance, but we'll see ...
have fun!0 -

I arrived yesterday on the Mexican Pacific Coast where I have a tiny little cabin and today is my first official vacation day. I also do not plan to deprive myself, but as always I have decided to eat at maintenance, but not more....that allows me to eat more if I want to, eat higher calorie items in bigger portions, have a drink or three or some dessert. The only thing I don't do is everything at the same time. I have made real good efforts in the last year and two days here in MFP to change my lifestyle, have lost 50 pounds and am not going to jeopardize those efforts with the excuse of " not depriving myself ", because I don't....plus I always thought that a lifestyle was forever.
As always I will do things with moderation even if I eat 400-500 calories more. Logging is part of my routine and just as I don't stop brushing my teeth or taking a shower because I am on vacation, I also won't stop logging.0 -

This. When I'm on vacation, I eat all the food. I can worry about the pound or two I gained when I get back.0 -
I'm a 103 day streak, and have every intention of logging while on vacation. It's getting a bit out of hand, maybe, but when it's working and you're feeling great.... keep on, keeping on!0

I have never bothered logging on vacation. IMO, it's the perfect opportunity to practice for real life and portion control//moderation which are the keys to maintaining down the road. IMO people should look at logging and keeping a diary as training yourself how to eat again...that's the way I look at it and have maintained for nearly a year now without logging save for a spot check here and there.
I always found vacations and the like to be good opportunities to practice real world eating. I never gained a Lb while on vacation and usually kept losing...even though I wasn't tracking I was mindful of what I was consuming and I also tend to do quite a bit of walking and whatnot when I'm on vacation...I don't do a whole lot of lazing around.
Also, I don't worry about log in streaks and whatnot...some people get into that but logging into MFP or not doesn't have anything to do with my actual health of fitness. I certainly never had the compulsion to make sure I was logging into MFP during vacation just for a streak.0 -
I didn't bother last year, I had no idea how what I was eating was cooked anyway so figured it wouldn't be worth the aggravation.
I wish I had still logged on to keep my streak though. Oh well.0 -
Thanks for all the comments. In previous posts I have commented on my knowledge of my own psychology which is that I eat smaller portions of anything I fancy eating rather than "depriving myself" which just makes my willpower struggle!! Hence my comment about not depriving myself! Smaller portions and careful consideration of food choices and whether something is worth eating have worked so far for me and I'm losing steadily. I think I will have a logging break, keep walking etc and when I get back not eat back exercise calories for a while! I don't intend to jeapordise my successes so far0

Well I'm back from my week away! I didn't log while away. I did eat more than normal in terms of unusual breads and cheeses but I kept portions reasonable and piled my plate with salads at every opportunity! Had more wine than normal too. Made sure I walked every day as well and carried on tracking that with my pedometer. Anyway I have only put on 2 lbs and am pleased with that as I expected more! Will start logging again tomorrow and diet and exercise completely back to normal so expect to start losing again pretty quick0
