how long do i wait before exercising again

2 weeks ago, i suffered a nasty shoulder / arm injury which to this day is still giving me pain. Unable to sleep probably due to pain and can't seem to get comfortable. also walking the pain can become unbearable. would like to do some light walking but don't want to over do it. My GP has told me now swimming for a while also. Feel very stuck in the mud but was wondering do i wait until my pain has gone or do i attempt light exercise like walking. I have also signed up for Race for life in 8 weeks but feel at this rate will only be able to take part if the pain goes. Help please!
