How to lower sodium

Hey guys!

My nutritionist would like me to monitor the amount of sodium i consume on a daily basis.

Her recommendation was to limit processed meals to once per day.

I am a full time college student, so the majority of my lunches are ate at the food court at the university.

I enjoy cooking so am open to tips and tricks to limit sodium in my cooking.

My diary is open if you have any suggestions or substitutions!

Thanks!

I check the sodium on everthing I buy - especially frozen dinners. I try to stay under 15%. I buy low sodium turkey breast at deli counter for lunch.

Eating things that don't need or have a lot of sodium are great. Does your school have fruit available? I agree that limiting processed foods is key, because most processed food are loaded with sodium.

Look up the DASH diet. It's the low sodium diet that people with high blood pressure are advised to follow. Basic cornerstone is to avoid processed foods and incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables. Keyword there is "fresh" as canned ones can have an insane amount of sodium hidden in them.

I've replaced using table salt (Sodium chloride) with a Sodium-free salt substitute (Potassium chloride). Most people tend to be low in their Potassium intake anyway, so it's a win-win situation. It's more expensive than table salt, but it tastes the same.

But this doesn't help with processed foods and food court offerings. It might be bet to cut way back on those.
