When Dr. Oz was on Oprah a while ago he talked about this smoothie that he has for breakfast, but some of the ingredients seem weird and I just wondered if anyone had ever tried it and if it is good enough to be my ENTIRE breakfast?! lol

The Quick Magical Breakfast Blaster
2 servings, 136 calories per serving

1 scoop (1/3 cup) Soy protein (like Nature's Plus Spiru-Tein)
1/2 tablespoon flaxseed oil
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 large ripe banana (or other fruits of your choice)
1/2 tablespoon apple juice concentrate or honey
1 teaspoon Psyillium seed husks

Peel banana; break into chunks. Put all ingredients in a blender. Add 12 ounces of water and ice, as well as powdered vitamins. Cover, blend until fairly smooth.

I drink a similar smoothie - but I just can't do the psyllium husks - they are just heinous (to me). You might get hooked on these for breakfast though! I have one any morning that I run out the door early.

Another good combo is vanilla protein powder (100 cals) peanut butter (100 cals), 1 cup of almond milk (40 cals), half a banana (40 cals), ice, and blend! 240 cals and DELCIOUS! Lots of protein holds me all morning.

    Enjoy!

I've never tried it. It looks like a laxative shake to me: Psyllium is Metamucil!

It's great to have fiber in your breakfast, but you'd be better off getting it from something solid. I don't know if you're a shake-drinker already, but in general, liquid calories aren't as filling as solid ones.

136 calories is probably not enough for a nutritious breakfast. You are likely to find yourself hungry again within 2 hours. Ideally you should eat enough for breakfast that you don't feel the need to eat anything else until lunch. (This should be possible with 200-350 calories of SOLID food.)

Because breakfast sets the tone for the day, it's important to get it right. A good breakfast "routine" makes that easier:

My superfit dad has 3 slices of high protein high fiber bread and an apple (400 calories).
I make 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1/2 cup skim milk, sweetened with cinnamon and splenda (200 calories)

Is this something you'd want to make every day? Do you want to clean your blender that often?

Finally, a routine is a good routine if it's adaptable OUT OF THE HOUSE. You're not going to find this shake when you go out for brunch or travel. It's best to eat a breakfast that's available everywhere.

I have Dr. Oz's book "You on a Diet". Its a pretty good read and has a lot of good recipes (including this smoothie) in it. Until now I didn't realize Oprah's Dr. Oz was the same guy who wrote the book! :) Clearly I don't watch Oprah.

Banks - do try that shake, it's KILLER! Another quick idea on the run is a whole wheat flax tortilla, spread with PB, then insert banana, and wrap it up! Delicious...

    Yellow Pepper - thanks :blushing:

Jenna - Of course mix up your breakfast choices, but the shakes are a good supplement - also great after strength training (I also do 1 serving of powder with water and ice - 100 cals - in the afternoon if I am peckish, and getting cravings...)

Let us know what you think!

I used to drink a similar one with soy milk, soy protein, and blueberries. Yummy. Very filling.
