Beginner Lifting

I'm looking for any tips/advice on starting a lifting program. I've been doing mostly cardio, with a bit of strength straining (kettlebell, pushups, very very basic stuff) but would like to start lifting. I'll be heading back home on the long weekend and I plan to "borrow" my brother's old weight set. It's out in a storage shed collecting dust, so I'm sure he won't miss it! From what I remember, there's a bench with a barbell, and a couple dumb bells. What's a good plan for starting out? Should I do 3-4 days a week and cardio on alternate days or do cardio and weights each day? I have about an hour each day to work out.

Any tips, advice, links to information would be greatly appreciated! If anyone who does lift would like to add me and be by mentor/go to person, I would absolutely love that!!

Thanks in advance!

I asked the same question for my DH and I. They recommended Starting Strength as a decent workout program. There are other programs that are good too. IMHO, pick one and stick with it for a year. Good score on the free equipment!

Starting Strength, StrongLifts 5x5, New Rules of Lifting (for Women or not, doesn't matter, but they have a new book called Supercharged out now), All Pro: A Simple Beginner's Routine (has deload built in) and Simply Shredded for starters. I would do a full body 3 days a week, alternating with cardio days, plus a rest day, starting out. If you do New Rules of Lifting for Women or Supercharged, there's a group for NROL4W that has a link to pre-filled worksheets that make doing the exercises a lot less confusing.
