Yes. I eat at night. If I didn't I would starve at work. I work night shift, so your night is my day. Midnight starts tomorrow, so I plan my calories around midnight to midnight...not some imaginary time when you "shouldn't eat"...I'm not sure, does a burger have more calories in it after the sun sets? Why the arbitrary restriction to stop stuffing your face when the sun sets?

    All of this.

I work afternoons so my timing is all off. If I didn't eat late at night I'd never eat! So long as it fits my calorie goals I have no issues eating dinner at 10pm and snacking again around 1 or 2am. Going to bed hungry makes me MISERABLE.

If you're keeping within your range, then it doesn't matter when your last food intake is. I personally have always been a morning eater, consuming a big chunk of my calories by noon. After 5 pm my appetite greatly diminishes so I end up eating little more than an apple or a tomato.

If a rule is hard to follow for you and does not add much to your weigh loss or health, just drop it
  • If I'm hungry I do. I usually eat a very early dinner around 4/5pm and then eat a substantial snack at 8/9pm.

my largest meal of the day is almost always dinner and that's almost always around 10 or later and I sleep fine. It just matters what works for your body so listen to it! :)

Because of our schedules, my husband and I regularly eat dinner around 9pm. On the weekends, I snack late at night. IIFYM and all.

I've given up a lot to diet using MFP, stuff like chips, candy, Coke, 5-Guys burgers, you get the idea. I'm OK with that. But I'm not OK with the no-food-after-dinner approach.

I was not aware that anything on MFP promotes the no eating after dinner idea.

Anyway, yes I often eat at night.

I eat chips etc sometimes too.

By the time 9pm rolls around I want to watch a DVD and have something fairly substantial to eat. I've been budgeting my calories and trying to eat healthy snacks like Greek yogurt (I get it plain and add some jam, topping with Grape Nuts and almonds). Do you eat at night or is that a big no-no?

you know, you can still eat the burgers, chips, things you like and as long as you maintain your deficit you will lose weight.

Meal timing has nothing to do with metabolism, so eat when you want, and just make sure that you are eating in a deficit…

my last meal is usually 9pm...

I snack after dinner, but I don't have any carbs. Usually just grab some left over chicken, or maybe some broccoli or something like that.

you can eat carbs at night too….

Myself specifically, no I don't eat after 8 pm. But thats when I used to binge eat so I chose not to eat during those hours.
  • I personally try not to eat at night, but that's only because I find that I'm not snackish at nighttime, and if I eat something I won't be able to stop eating other things.

Reserve some cals for nighttime noshing. Personally, I've never bought the 'eating shortly before sleeping makes your sleep worse'. Uh, nope. I can not sleep if I am hungry, my brain simply will not shut off. I don't know that it matters when you eat as long as you are not going over your cal budget. Popcorn is a great snacky because you can get a lot for not a boatload of cals ... because you will be leaving that butter off, right? lol Put 1/4 cup kernels into a brown paper lunch bag, stand it upright in the microwave, pop for about 2 min (time will vary depending on your microwave, might have to experiment. Burnt popcorn is gross). Season it up with some butter flavored non-stick spray and your favorite seasonings. Add a big old glass of water and there you go.

Where do you find carb-free broccoli?

I succumb to eating at night sometimes. I wake up around 8-10 AM and don't go to bed until 2 AM a lot of nights because I work closing shifts. Even though I eat dinner right before work at 7-8 pm, I'm inevitably hungry by the time I get home at 1 AM, 5-6 hours later, which is obviously long enough to be time for another meal. Sometimes, I try to go to bed hungry, but it doesn't always work. Sometimes you have to give in.

I eat a snack around 8pm it's normally a banana since they help with sleep and 100% natural peanutbutter because well I'm addicted to P.B. I try to not eat past 9pm, I've noticed if I eat at 8pm my body does better but anything after 9pm my weight lost slows down. That's just me! Everyone is different, if you snack at night and still see changes with your weight then do what works best for YOU....

I'm not a Gremlin - I eat when I want. I also have a job and a life and would starve to death if I followed those ridiculous don't eat after X time rules.

The way my work schedule works, I don't get my work out in until usually after 8 p.m......and then I come home, have a blended whey protein shake with berries, spinach, bananas, whatever odd fruit I got laying around.....and that's my "snack"/dinner.....lol. Now don't get me wrong I still eat my pastries, sweets, donuts, etc....but they are usually for breakfast/lunch.....with me and my fiancés work schedule, our lunch together is basically my dinner.

What time you consume your calories has no bearing on weight loss. Whatever works best for you and fits in your plan.

I eat almost EXCLUSIVELY at night. Sleeping in until noon every day might have something to do with it, though.

I think the only reason that people say "don't eat after dinner" or "don't eat after X time" is because when you are tired your inhibitions are lowered (that's where those weirdly personal 3am conversations come from) and you may not make the best eating decisions. Especially if you plan your nighttime snack in advance, there's nothing wrong with it!

I also read somewhere recently that it's a good idea to have a high-protein snack before bed if you are lifting weights (which I am and everyone else should because lifting weights is rad) because as your body is sleeping it repairs itself.

As long as it doesn't cause you heartburn or sleeping problems and you stay within your calorie nd macro goals, it's totally fine to eat late at night.

    Agree with this.

I switched over to an IF style timing. I eat my meals between 12pm-6pm, usually that this involves is eating a medium lunch right at noon and a large meal at around 4pm. It's enough to keep me filled until I wake up the next morning.

I really couldn't stand to eat again later, because I'm full. The eating window approach keeps me pretty well satiated. The only time that sucks is the morning.
