Logging during the holidays?!?!

With Easter coming up (my first holiday since committing to keeping a food diary and working on losing substantial weight), I was wondering how you guys deal with logging your calories at a big family meal. Lately, I prepare all of my food myself, or my sister will, and keeps a list of everything she adds to our meals for me to log later, but I feel like it's going to be next to impossible to log food made by the rest of the family when I have no clue what's IN anything.
Any tips for surviving holiday dinners without waaayyy overdoing it?

hit the meats first
eat the fruit trays and vegetables (avoid most dips)
throw out anything that sucks, especially if said garbage was store bought
cut cake slices smaller
eat every dessert and throw out anything that sucks
share larger deserts that cant be portioned smaller
eat prior if it makes you more comfortable
Oh.. and dont tell anyone you're on a diet... that almost always seems to draw the wrong kind of attention
as for logging... just guess and forget about it.... its not a big deal.0
