So, I have started insanity numerous times and only ever made it to about week 5 before quitting because I have found it tedious and boring - yes I can see results, but I cannot stand 40-60 minutes of cardio 6 times a week.

I enjoy strength training and just now I use various kettlebells and I have a barbell which goes up to 50kg (wayyyy more than what I can lift just now: I probably need to invest in a squat rack soon, but otherwise I'm good).

I was thinking of doing the following: strength training alternated with one insanity workout every other day OR just scrapping insanity and doing strength training 4-5 times a week, followed by 10-15mins of HIIT a few times, with a long walk/some swimming once per week for a little additional cardio.

I am trying to tone, while still needing to drop about 14-20lbs (24lbs at a push, although I'm more focused on how my body looks as opposed to the numbers).

Is it beneficial to do more cardio with the same amount of strength, or would the strength plus a little cardio each week help me achieve my goals?

I would do alternating days. One day strength next day cardio then strength again. That's just me. Whatever you like to do that fits your schedule will work too. If you don't like insanity don't do it. The best approach to this is finding ways to exercise that you actually enjoy or can at least put up with. What will really help you reach your goals is eat with a little calorie deficit everyday, about 200-300 calories below your maintenance. It has to be accurate and consistent. You lose more wight through diet than you do exercise. As the fat leaves you will see tone. Most of time people are already toned but fat is covering it.
