The seated and the standing calf raise thingy (i can't believe I just called them that) are to big for me. The standing one is inches above my shoulders when it's at rest and same issue with my legs and the seated one. I'm too short. Any suggestions on alternatives?

Hold dumbells? Why do you need a machine for them?

Indeed. I will ask questions in the future post morning coffee

Although I wouldn't exactly label either a machine.

I'm not sure which machine you're talking about. I do calf raises several ways:
    1) hold dumbells
    2) stand on one foot and go up on my toes and back down. Do this without holding onto anything to work on balance at the same time.
    3) Put a half roller on the floor, face down. (By half roller, I mean one that is semicircular---it is about 18" long and has a flat side and a curves side.) Stand on it with both feet with the balls of your feet on the top of the curve.. Bring your heels down so that they are below the level of the balls of your feet. Now raise up onto your toes. Also do it with 1 foot. Do not hold onto anything so you can work on balance. You can do it with bare feet to strengthen tendons, etc. in feet.

I like using the leg press. Two birds, one stone!
