Protein powder?

I have about 20 lbs to loose and my BMI is about 25.5 (on the low end of overweight). I work out 6 days a week (usually 4 days of 35 mins of metabolic training and 3 days of just cardio - often running.). So I'm wondering if there would be benefits to using a protein power? If so, what is the best way to use them? part of a smoothie? a meal replacement? snack? Thanks!

I looked back on the past few days in your diary, and it generally seems like you don't get enough protein. You should aim for .8g protein per pound of body weight, if possible. That's not a hard number and a lot of people debate it, but I think it's important, especially on lower-calorie diets and when you're exercising so as to prevent the loss of lean body mass. So I do think you might benefit from protein powder.

There is no "best" way to use them. It all depends on your preferences and how they fit into your diet and calorie limits. Take your protein the way you like best. I have a delicious chocolate protein powder that I blend with skim milk and banana either for a nighttime snack or after a workout, though I bet it would make really great protein brownies too.
  • Protein powder, I feel, has two purposes: To sustain muscle mass, or to grow muscle mass.

I am 5'9", 220, and I love my protein. I try to get it from natural resources, but boneless skinless chicken breasts get old after a while, and beef has a lot of saturated fat (which I am trying to minimize to about 20% of my fat intake- check my diary). I do have protein shakes after a hard workout. It is the fastest and easiest way for your body to metabolize the proteins and recover.

I have the Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey, strawberry or chocolate peanut butter. its on the shelf at Walmart. There are probably better ones out there, but the ingredients are good for the price. They don't load it up with sugar. I drink a lot of milk, so I usually have it in an ice shake: about 2c milk, 1 scoop protein, any fruits or yogurt, and about 3 or 4 ice cubes. Its about 410 calories without fruit. That is a man-sized portion, so you have to decide how much you need as a woman....our metabolisms are different.
