those Damn scales

I started my weight loss journey only a week ago but mid week I weighted myself and had lost 2 lbs already which really spurred me on , however having weighed myself this morning apparently I've put all on those 2lb s plus another, even though I've been eating well and working out.

Seriously puts a damper on things, especially since I'm at the beginning and it's so hard to stay motivated since I have seen no changes yet. Makes me feel like I'll never be at the weight I once was.

Be reassured, it is not the scale - it is you!
Useless to weight yourself every other day, body weight fluctuates from one hour to another, water retention, bowel movements, time of the day, eating, not eating.... list is endless.
If you really have to weight yourself do it once every 2 weeks or a month, same time, same conditions every time.

Your best and more accurate means of measurement (at least in my opinion) is either a tape measurer or else the mirror - once again - not every day!

Normal daily fluctuations just follow the trend over time

To me wake up Monday morning weight yourself before you eat or drink anything and also in similar cloths or naked. Then do it the following Monday. Once a week us enough.

Are you weighing yourself at the same time every day or week? If you weigh yourself in the morn today and in the afternoon tomorrow, of course you will gain weight.

This is one of the first important things you have to learn when starting the weight loss journey. Forget about the scale, and I mean it. Your best friend now are the mirror and MFP.

I have to disagree, to me the scale is extremely important. To me you should do it once a week. Helps you keep track of what's going on. It was something I always relied on, to see progress every week, and told me a lot about we're I was going wrong or doing good
  • thank you for all your replies, the measurements are definitely what I'm working towards more than the weight, so I think im going to do a weight and measurement check every two weeks as suggested :)

Luckily I've taken measurements at the beginning of last week so I can compare.Thank you all for your support, its just destroying to see the scales go up after working hard, even if it's normal fluctuations lol.

The scale is just one tool to use to measure your progress. Use it along with tape measurements, how you look in the mirror, how you FEEL, and my favorite... jeans fresh out of the dryer. As long as your general trend over time is downward you'll be on the right track.

i have said a dozen times, the scale is only a measure of the effect of gravity, if you JUST STARTED a work out schedule thats most likely glycogen ( commonly referred to as stored water weight) do not let the scale numbers get you down, if you do , then you need to rethink how you are weighing and why it bothers you so much

What i mean is this ... yesterday was easter right ? about 60% of people had baked ham and gravy, and maybe green bean casserole.. right?
if you did , just think of the salt, that amount of salt is definately enough to throw you for a loop
i know it would me ,
if you didnt already, take all your measurements , you really need to , it will make a Lot more sense to you ,
150 out of shape and 150 with lots of LBM look way different

I could go over all the reasons for this minor fluctuation, that we all have, but it will be well answered on the board. As you are new, I wanted to tell you something else. How long ago were you at the the weight you wanted to be? For me, about 35 years. Yup, 35 years. And I have been many weights up and down over those years. This time I started logging and tracking and measuring. That is the goal. I tweak the diet as needed, but for sure on Sunday's. I decided to give it 30 days to change all of the habits. Every week, I have changed things- every week it gets better. It is NOT logical if you have been off your goal weight, for lets say, even 5 years to wake up tomorrow and fix it. The obsession with what is likely water weight tells, this is an over reaction.

How long did it take you to gain this weight? How many years since you were on goal? Is it logical that you could start your diet overnight and a week or two later- everything is perfect? No it is not. The scale is a tool. What is important is not the ups and downs if you are on plan, but the change from month to month, not day to day.

If you keep measuring & logging, you will build a lifetime habit and be released of this monkey on your back for good. If I had a pill to offer you, that if you took it everyday for 30 days, your eyes will open on the 30th day and your weight problems will be solved forever. You would jump on it. So would I. This is the pill. Logging, tracking and keeping true. You have found your way. Keep going.

    (((Empathy)))

Those bathroom scales are almost as bad as our driver's licence photos. They reveal the truth.

Yes, unfortunately, we really DO look like that. Aaauuuggghhhh!

And scales - it has been extremely disappointing the small amount of weight I have lost. I will try to weigh bi-weekly. I will need another person's help to get the body measurements.
