Buying New Clothes

Hello MFP family,

I need some ideas. I have a little over 20lbs to lose. Right now, I'm in sizes 10/12. Size 12 is too big and size 10 doesn't fit the way I would like. What would you recommend in terms of buying a few new pieces of clothing? I'm trying to get to 135lbs/140lbs, but I'm currently 161lbs and I don't want to invest in a lot of "larger sizes" when my ultimate goal is to be smaller. Should I continue to wear pants that give me the saggy diaper look or invest in something new?

    I recommend getting new stuff (or even secondhand stuff) that fits and flatters you NOW, just don't go overboard since you'll need a different size soon. Assuming you can afford to purchase a few basics and fun things, say 5-10 items, it should not be too much of a problem. Think capsule wardrobe, with lots of mix and match (possibly with various items you already own) rather than building a whole wardrobe in your "right now" size.

    I learned that the hard way. It took me YEARS of weight loss to go from size 22 to 18 so I bought a whole new wardrobe in 18 only to need 16 and then 14 within a few months' time.

    Also, I feel your pain so to speak...right now a lot of my 14s are looking a bit loose/saggy but I can't get into most 12s yet. And I'm having to try on all of my tops because I find that L & XL can mean anything these days from very tiny to far too large for me.

    Well I have actually bought clothes all along my weight loss and now that I am down to my last 20 pounds I'm tired of trying to find things that fit and still look decent when I lose inches or a few pounds.

    Last week I wore a pair of pants to work and a co-worker pointed out my saggy butt pants and suggested maybe I should try wearing leggings until I finish losing weight. I might give that a try, tunics are in this spring!

    Look into consignment shops and thrift stores when shopping. There you can find a verity of clothing that are still good looking and costs less then regular stores. Beals and Ross are my favorite right now. Also see if some of the clothing you have can be sold at a consignment shop. That way you get some money to spend on new clothing.

    I feel your pain! I've got jeans ranging in size from 10 to 14 and they all pretty much fit the same. Although the 14s are only good for one day's wearing (then I get that saggy butt look) and the 10's are a bit snug and muffin top enducing. LOL!

    Shopping at consignment shops and thrift stores can actually be kind of helpful because they carry a huge variety of name brands so sometimes one brand's 10 fits great while another brand's 12 is better. Plus you won't be spending a ton of money and most of the clothing is practically new. Although do be careful and look things over well. I bought a pair of jeans a while ago that fit great but I didn't notice they'd been hemmed until I got them home. Oh well, they'll make great cut off shorts. :)

    I am currently going through the same thing. My friends and I started our journies together, and since we were all different sizes to begin with, we started a clothes circle. This is how it works: as clothing gets too big, we put it aside and once a month or so, we come together and exchange clothing. This also helps to motivate each of us to stay on track, and ultimately be our most fabulous self.

    Also, I have found that in my journey, the thrift shop is my friend. I am cycling through about every 6 weeks because things just don't fit like they used to, which is a good thing!

    Maybe try some dresses with a bit of strech to them. I find they tend to be a bit more flexible. Non formfitting is probably better for this. I have several in wrap styles and emire waist types that work great (fell into the habbit of too many of these though and it can get easily not to notice weight gain!). I'm not real busty and don't lose a lot of weight from my chest so this is probably why this works for me. It may not if you lose more in the bust area.

    pay attention to skirts and dresses!! When you are inbetween sizes often skirts or dresses still look flattering if a lil big- you can sit them lower or higher on your waist, or slip a cardi around your shoulders or a scarf at the neck, pair them with leggings or other layers...its helped me a lot!

    I'm in the exact same spot, I have one pair of pants I can wear right now and it is so frustrating went to old navy to get a pair of jeans and the 12s were big and the 10s were small. I'm going to wait until the end of the month and go back and see if the 10 works. Luckily I wear skirts and dresses to work and those don't depend so much on size. I'm already getting smaller than the round of clothes I bought at 10 pounds lost so I think I'm going to suffer with baggy clothes for a while.

    I have about 11 pounds to go and I am finding a similar problem. For now, I'd resist buying anything new. Maybe look at things you already own that used to be a little tight. I bet they would fit better now. Also, if you do need to buy something, thrift shops and secondhand stores are a great option. I like to go to thrift shops in fancy neighborhoods because they usually have better women's clothing. And I agree with everyone who said skirts and dresses are the way to go for now.     Totally get a few new articles of clothing, but go cheap. If you have something like a TJ Max, Ross Dress for Less, Burlington Coat Factory, or even a Goodwill for second-hand clothes, you'll feel better for having clothes that fit, and you won't blow your budget.
