Teen Extreme Weight Loss Help

Hello,
I need to lose around 90 pounds, no hurry but would like it done in around 6 months. I have been doing a 'jockey diet'. I am currently 204 lb and around 5 8' and in my teenage years. I have been trying to consume under 900-1000 calories to day and have been walking 7.6 KM per day burning around 500 (trying to keep net calories under 500) in about 65 minutes. I don't eat much now, but the majority of my calories come from something I regret. Any advice or tips would be most helpful!
Thanks and good luck to all the other nice people on this site :)

    1. 90lbs in 6 months is too fast
    2. 900-1000 calories is too little for a growing child
    3. You are too young to agree to the ToS of this site therefore cannot be here.

Talk to a professional as you are in need of some good medical advice on how to lose weight in a healthy manner...and by professional I mean a registered dietician who is current in their studies.
  • I'm 19 years old! A 5 8' 200 pound 13 year old. I think not!

Your profile says you are 18. But whatever... everything else Stef says is true.

You have to be a troll, because you are claiming to be 5'8" with a goal weight of 114 lbs.
  • Hi, please google 'jockey weight' and read that any jockey must be under 130 pounds . Realistically, they need to be around 110 without any gear. I am sorry you feel this way about me and that I 'troll' but that is honestly pointless. Good luck in your loss and congrats on the 7lbs

    Take what you're doing.
    And then don't do that.
Like, not in a million years, do not ever do what you are doing right now.

It's fine that your goal weight is low, especially because you have a reason, but you absolutely NEED to do it in a healthy way or you will develop a horrible eating disorder that will ruin your life. That may seem dramatic now, but it's really not.

Your BMR is 2053 (assuming you're 18, but close enough anyway.) You're doing an hour of exercise every day so at LEAST you are "active." I'm being conservative, so this is a low-balled number here. That makes your activity multiplier 1.6. 2053 x 1.6 = 3285 calories to maintain your current weight.

To lose weight aggressively, at a rate of 2lbs/week, you still need to be eating over 2200 calories every day. You should NOT attempt to lose weight more quickly than that. In fact, I would recommend cutting calories by 20-25% rather than 1000 calories, which would give you 2464-2628 calories as your goal. It's sustainable, and the weight will likely stay off if you do it this way.

Please be careful and eat enough. Your body needs it.

If a jockey has to be that weight then you're evidently too tall to pursue that career without resorting to dangerous and unhealthy methods. Needless to say those methods are unlikely to get encouragement on this site.

your methods sound like a child you will have to forgive me for the assumptions.

So the only thing that doesn't fit is you are old enough to agree to the terms of service.

I have a 19 year old man child...and yes you qualify as that too...

Any young male who is eating 900-1000 calories needs to talk to a professional regardless of what profession you want. This is a very unhealthy weight loss goal and method.

Depending on the type of jockey you want to become the weight ranges from 116 for flat and 136 for jumps...now at 5 ft 8 136 would be very very slim for you...but that wont happen in 6 months you should have started 6-12 months ago. As well for a jockey the clothing and saddle come into play...

generally the accepted standard is limited to shorted riders to prevent a taller person being an unhealthy low weight. On average, jockeys are 4'10' - 5'6' and 108 - 118 pounds.

not sure who told you that you would be a good jockey but you need a 2nd opinion...

and yes I know horses etc my husbands family has champions here in Canada...not racing horses but still champions.

Jockeys are typically around 4 ft 10 in to 5 ft 6 in. Have you ever thought that this may not be a good profession for you? Maybe work with horses as a trainer? With you height, you weight would be to low and you would look very ill. You might even FEEL very ill!

Aren't you too tall to be a jockey? I know there aren't height limits for jockeys, but because of the extremely low weight that jockeys have to maintain, you typically don't see tall people as jockeys. You'll be underweight at 114 pounds at 5 feet 8 inches tall. Please reconsider the idea of wanting to be a jockey. Is it worth putting your health at risk?
  • Hi, well for a jockey I am 2" under the average. Most successful jump jockeys, including the world best are 5 10" but I am only 5 8" great question and thanks for the reply :)

i think that most jockeys are naturally very slim with small bone structure... much like models or gymnasts.... unfortunately it will probably be very difficult for yuo to get to 110lbs at your height and still be healthy.

Stop everything you are doing, except the walking, this is reasonable exercise.
Set realistic weight loss goals, like 2-4 lbs per month and a realistic final weight goal, that will not mean you will require IV nutrition to recover in the end. Your weight goal makes no sense.
Calculate your TDEE, and eat at a 10%-15% deficit so you can lose some weight and remain healthy.

Or choose a nice hospital now, so you do not end up in a place you do not like in a few months.

    ^^^ all of this

and if you're under 18 then you're still growing and need a whole bunch of extra calories in addition to those mentioned above to grow and develop normally!!! I know you said you're 19 but this site is full of younger teens doing dangerous dieting and lying about their age, so I have to point that out in case you're one of them.

oh and by the way i was a teenager once and ruined a promising judo career and nearly got an eating disorder trying to make a weight class that I should never have been trying to get into based on my frame size and lean body mass. So trust me on this one, because starving yourself never ends well. I should have just gone up a weight category and got in the gym to develop enough strength to handle that weight category.

if your height and frame size doesn't allow you to get down to low enough weights to be a jockey then find a new ambition. some sports suit some body types better than others. I'm short and stocky and would never make a good basketball player with any amount of training or dieting.

I will not tell you that you can't be a jockey, I will not tell you that you would be sick at that weight, the only thing I will tell you that the rate of weight loss and the goal weight you have in mind are too steep and go beyond what this forum can provide.

If you are serious about this, you need to see a professional, preferably a doctor, who would monitor your progress and deal with any issues as soon as they emerge (and they probably will). If you are indeed good at what you do, you may want to lose some weight on your own at a healthy pace until you are around 20-21 BMI. After that you may want to try out for a serious athletic team with a contract that includes dietitians and health monitoring to take your weight loss progress further. If no such team will take you as an investment and would rather have people who are already at the desired weight, save up as much money as you can during the year or so you will be losing weight on your own and invest that into professional monitoring.

Not in a hurry, but want it done in 6 months? That sounds like a huge hurry to me.

Aim for 2 lbs per week. Then when you get down to your last 40 lbs, switch to 1 lb per week. Then at 10 lbs switch to 1/2 lb per week. As a 19 year old guy you can eat a LOT more calories, and you should. Severe calorie deficit leads to loss of muscle mass, loss of hair, and binging, among other things.

Also, your goal is unhealthy. 110 lbs at 5'8" puts you at a BMI of 16.7, which is severely underweight and will put you at risk for health issues. I don't think there's any way to reach your goal and be healthy.

No you are over for a jockey...jump jockey weight is typically 130lbs...Lester Piggott was 5 ft 7 1/2 inches tall and Richard Hughes of the UK is 5ft 10 inches

Here is a link...jump jockey's are taller but heavier than 110lbs...that is for flat.

If you are going to be a jump why are you aiming for the weight of a flat????

This is good advice. Whether you take it or not, will determine how successful you will be. Your choice.

Don't most jockeys also experience serious health issues, especially as they get older, from a lifetime of extreme restriction? Maybe you don't care but...just because some professionals do it doesn't make it ok.
  • Well some races require significantly less and is have been advised to aim for around 105-110 lbs as a jump jockey. Definitely not a flat jockey, too tall.

You do realize that the profession of a jockey typically means the following

    Up at 5am...bed at 11pm
Very little food to maintain weight which often leads to eating disorders.

This profession as well only make about 25k a year...

This particular profession is as scrutinized as the modeling industry for the eating disorders it creates.

And not sure who advised you that jump jockey is 105-110 but they are full of crap that is for flat jockey...read the link I sent from the british horse racing and you will see that most jump jockeys are at least 9 stone 12 lbs which equals 138lbs and he was the smallest at 5 ft 7 for jump...most are over 10st and shorter than you...

So one of two things is going on...you have no idea about this or you posted to incite aka troll...

They are usually much shorter than 5'8" as well, or you have the suggested weight way wrong.... Think your are mixing the heights and weight for the different types of jockeys. at 5'8" no way you should be less than 130ish lbs

He may be an accidental troll. That is, he may not be intentionally trolling, but by the very absurdity of his intentions, it amounts to the same thing.

The fact that he is still arguing that at 5'8" dieting down to 114 lbs is quite simply crazy, either way.
