How much is considered to be low carb?

Hi guys! I'm considering switching to a low carb diet, but I'm not really 100% sure how many carbs I should be eating at most on this kind of diet. Most recently, I've been eating around 100-120 of carbs a day according to MFP, but am unsure whether this would be considered to be low carb or not.

Anything less than 100g per day is considered low.
Below 50g prolonged would likely put you into ketosis.0 -
Why do you want a low carb diet though ??
Reducing carbs alone isn't the silver bullet to weight-loss; it's all about calorie deficit.....
I'm doing it to try to get more satiety from protein and fat. I'm still having carbs ... but getting them from fruit and veg and am limiting refined starchy carbs for the most part.
Note - I am "limiting" but not cutting out completely!0 -
For study purposes anything under the RDA would be considered low carb.0

do you have a carb sensitivity? What are your goals? Why do you think that low carb will help you meet those goals?0

about 100g is considered low.
What is you overall goal - is it quick weight loss or a total eating style change?
If you need some additional information regards low carb food then try www.marksdailyapple.com, or there is a primal group which will probably steer you in the right direction.0 -

I personally look at total carbs, which obviously includes fibre. I'm not sure it matters too much unless you are trying to go really low carb (probably matters more for things like Atkins induction period).
It's probably something each individual will have to experiment with to find what works for them.0 -
Keeping under 100 carbs is good. Keeping under 50 is great. Keeping under 20 is awesome but requires dedication, and will most likely put you into ketosis.
To learn more about ketosis I can wholeheartedly recommend this site:

No matter what you decide, I personally believe that everyone can benefit from reducing carb intake on a daily basis. Good luck!0 -

True. I believe we need to understand the OP's goals before we can make a recommendation on a path. Unless she only cares about knowing what the threshold is to be considered "low carb"0 -

I lowered my carbs to under 140 per day and I did it to help with my cravings. During that time I did lose weight due to the calorie deficit b/c eating more protein kept me full longer. but my stomach began having serious issues trying to digest all of the protein so I had to eat regular. it does work though with cravings and I do agree with the above statement0 -

If you like low carb and struggle with high amounts of protein, you could consider low carb, moderate protein and high fat. You get the same satiety effect as high protein but without the gas and stuff.0 -

Over to you OP!0 -
That's basically my intention. I'm cutting out breads, pastas etc and getting most of my carb intake from fruits and veggies!0

yes, but the question is why?
Do you have carb sensitivity?
Do you think that low carb is the secret to weight loss?
Do you binge on those foods?
At the end of the day, do what you want to ..I am just curious as to the reason to cut all those foods out.0 -

Sounds like a good idea.
The main thing is to get enough protein 0.7 - 1g of protein per lb of lean mass (depending on energy levels - the more out put the nearer to the 1g mark).
Then what you no longer eat in carbs eat from healthy fats Saturated, mono saturated, poly unsaturated. Just steer clear of man made trans fats.0
