I need more strength, but I have bad wrists...

I would like to start lifting to work on my strength. I need it for my chosen profession (metal sculpture) but I'm 99% sure I have carpal tunnel and I want to make sure I don't injure myself.

I've never lifted before and I was wondering if this awesome community has any tips.
