Walking miles vs speed

I am wondering why MFP measures walking speed rather than miles walked. It seems you would get a more accurate reading of actual speed if one measured how far one walks in a measured amount of time than by estimating how fast you walked in a measured number of minutes. Has anyone asked this before or does anyone know the answer?
