I don't really have a lot of people on my life so the connections I've made here mean the world to me. I had no idea signing up for a calorie counter just over one year ago would change my life so much.

I gauge my relationships by how they affect me, regardless of if they are corporeal or not.
  • Considering some of y'all have seen my wiener, I'd say you're IRL friends. Jussayin.

But on a more serious note, I definitely consider some of my FL to me IRL friends. We talk every day, text, etc... shiz friends do n stuff.

    OK, real answer:

I consider many people on here IRL friends. I actually trust many people on here more than I trust a lot of people that you would consider "IRL" friends (people I met outside of MFP).

That being said, because of who I am, I still always expect people to eventually walk away from me...that's even harder for me on the internet because (as someone else mentioned) it's very easy to walk away from a friendship on the internet.

    *gasp* HEY! That's my butt!!!

I often believe my MFP friends are IRL friends that I simply haven't had the pleasure of meeting yet. I mean... in reality it's only a matter of time before I actually get to motorboat Michelle.
I've "known" you so long and in so many ways (not as dirty as it sounds) that I forget we've never met ...

There aren't a lot of online people I have never met who feel like IRL friends, so usually I would say not until I actually meet them. But then there are a few like Odus ...

My word, that is soooo true. How long have we known each other? It was before I even got married, I think? So... 10 years??? And we've never even met IRL... Nor did we meet on MFP LOL

Some people on my friends list are turning into IRL friends, but not all.
I'm supposed to hang out with a girl in July when I visit her city for another event. I consider her one of the IRL ones cause we interact a lot and seem to have a lot in common. If we lived more than 1500km apart I would be hanging out with her already. Another girl I might meet in August when she comes to my city for a Lifting competition. Again, distance- I would meet her.

There is a lady on my FL who is about 20 minutes north of me that I probably would not consider an IRL friend. I guess the cut off for me is: would I meet them in person? or would I give them my cell number? If there are other modes of communication outside MFP- then they are friends. If MFP is the extent of the contact, they aren't an IRL friend yet.

I consider my friends here to be irl friends. Proximity is the only thing that keeps me from hanging out with all of my peeps.

On line relationships are different than real life, for me. I find myself sharing more, over sharing at times. I think that sharing is what builds the trust so fast. I mean, I've never driven 5 hours to the house of a person I've never met to get blind drunk and trapse around a town I've never been in before mfp.

Not 10. Closer to seven. I started WW after I moved to Tally and I've been here seven years this month. I think you were already married.

One of these days, I WILL get up to your area! I think we have both met some of the same people, but not each other yet.

Let me add to my statement.. Most of my friends on MFP I consider IRL friends.
I'd have jusst about any of them over to my house for dinner, if not for the fact my fiance is terrified i am going to get raped and murdered while serving dessert.
Plenty of my MFP friends on here(even ones I have not met) are better than my IRL friends(not IRL IRL MFP friends)

What makes them IRL friends? They make me laugh and have huge hearts.

    That's REALLY all I need.

I agree that my FL could be my IRL friends. There is obviously something about them that you connect with and that's how a friendship starts. Our group that is doing the 30DS has been fabulous and there is constant support and encouragement and I think that that is what makes this weight-loss thing work. When everyone is on the same page and has a common goal, everything just clicks!

Addressing both you and Husky, I dont think for a moment that those people who walk away are not impacted by that decision. Nor do I think that their reasons are always simple. They are making the best decision they can for themselves at the time and even if they tell themselves that the friends they are leaving "are only pixels& to make themselves feel better, I think they know in their hearts that it isnt true.

And to add -- I have met two people IRL who I met on here first (they live in town) and they are wonderful. They've both kind of melted into my circle of other friends, too, so it's even better.

One isn't on here anymore and the other rarely is, so now I ONLY "see" them IRL or on Facebook.

I do plan to meet a whole bunch more of you in July, though!

Amend that -- I have met four people. My brain is not working today. Anyway, they were all awesome.

Of course it is not unreasonable to consider your virtual friends [(VF’s) regardless of the social or other media] IRL friends. I have met people through both public and private media’s and have lasting friendships with them. But what makes a dear friend (a best friend) is one that would drop everything and be at your door on a minutes notice or at least on the way (of course this is just my opinion). Now that’s not to say a few of my VF’s wouldn’t be there if I needed them, I really believe that some of them would be there if I needed them.
I actually have several hundred friends through a Green Bay Packers site and several have offered me a place to stay if I can get up there. Now that’s a friend!
I work with people all over the US and the world most of them I have never met in person but we talk weekly and know a lot about each other’s personal life.

I have several people on my FL who I have shared my most private struggles with...I've laughed with, cried with, and supported these people. I've never met any of them IRL, but someday I hope to so that I can give them a big hug and tell them to their face how much they've meant to me.
