I joined in September, and tried to quit the same day, but it was too much change at once, and I fell off the quit smoking wagon. But this time, my hubby has been quit for months now and said that he noticed my breath wasn't that great since he quit and I was still puffin away. That put an end to my smoking 6 days ago. I feel so much better when I exercise now! I have been training for about a week with my ankle weights, just walking and this morning, I decided to try running once again. I got to my half mile mark jogging at a 12 minute mile pace and just couldn't run any further, but I was sure proud of this, as when I was smoking, I couldn't run a block without wheezing and stopping and coughing. Half a mile! I haven't done that in over two years! And when I stopped running, I went strong with power walking, I never stopped moving. Thanks MFP!!!

Yay!! I'm a former smoker as well. Once i kicked the habit I developed an extreme dislike for cigarettes. The smell is awful! When I smell it on other people I'm so glad that's more me anymore! Proud of you!!! Keep on runnin!

Thanks! It was just a big thing for me cuz all my life, I loved running(ran 3-4 miles a day), and I got pregnant with my son at 16 and hadn't gotten back into shape since. Then, I tacked on smoking when I was 18. I'll be 21 in November, so thank goodness I hadn't done too much damage to my lungs. Here's to healthy heart and lungs and strong running legs!

Congrats!!! That's great that you were able to quit. I have been smoking since I was 22 and I will be 30 the end of this week. I have got to quit! I ordered one of those electronic cigs, that are supposed to help you slowly step down the amount of nicotine to quit and also help with the hand to mouth habit I am hoping it helps me.

Congrats on quitting smoking! You've just taken a major step to improve your health as well as the health of your family. I'm proud of you. My brother carried around a tin of Altoids when he quit smoking, gave him something to do instead of smoke and his breath smelled fantastic! lol When he quit he also found that his fitness dramatically improved as well as his finances. He used the money to buy a used truck! Best wishes in your continued success:flowerforyou:

My hubby is doing the ecigarette and LOVES it! The important thing is not to run out of nicotine drops or atomizers that work. It's MUCH cheaper than traditional cigarettes, though. Good luck. I tried them, but I was addicted to lighting the cigarette as well, and needed that. lol

Congratulations on your commitment to stop smoking and embracing exercise and a healthy diet. Just for your information, don't walk or run with ankle weights because you may have serious knees and hips problem in the future. You can use your ankle weights to do legs exercises such as extension or lifts, but not for walking.:smile:

I'm so proud of you! CONGRATS! I quit smoking 13 years ago (the day I found out I was pregnant with my oldest) and never looked back. I did have craving at times. But about four years ago I was stressed out about a breakup and asked someone to give me a cigarette. I smoked it and then spent the rest of the night throwing up because it made me so sick! I've never had ONE craving since! When your body so determinedly rejects something, you KNOW its not good for you! Every day you will feel better and better.

Yayyyyyyyyyyyy for you, my friend! :)

Oh no! lol I only do strength training walking in place with the weights. I have NO intention on running with them. I LOVE doing leg exercises with them and I velcroed them together last night for a medicine ball effect to work my abs by leaning back and handing it left and right. There really isn't much you CAN'T do with them.

Aaaww! Thank you! I quit when I was pregnant with my daughter, but picked right back up two months after her birth. The benefits are way too great to go back and smoke again. My lung capacity has increased. I can breathe deeper already.

I'm an ex-smoker also (quit 17 years ago). It is especially hard when your significant other and/or others around you keep on smoking.

I know that the first step is really wanting to kick the habit, and realizing that the craving for nicotine has become an addiction. I think half the time we are in denial and don't realize that we have become addicted.

Now I can't stand the smell of smoke and can't believe how much of my life (and money) I wasted doing it for so many years. I got hooked on it back in the day of the Marlboro man, smoking was thought to be cool, cigarettes were cheap, and they had not come out with all of the reports about what it does to your health and hadn't come out with reports on second-hand smoke until years later.

You can do it! I'm glad you have taken steps to kick that habit to the curb!

Thanks, guys! Did you know that there is 3rd hand smoke as well, and it's more deadly than 2nd hand smoke? 3rd hand smoke is the residue left on your clothing that our kids and other loved ones are subjected to.

Good for you! I quit seven years ago, after smoking for 20 years!! The thing to remember is this.. the actual physical addiction is gone after 14 days.... anything after that is in your head or habit or whatever. Don't make it harder for yourself with negative self talk - eg. Oh I wish I could have a cigarette etc.. It just makes it harder on you... instead say to yourself - I am SO GLAD I don't have to smoke anymore and try and feel happy and positive rather than deprived.

A quote I liked was this - "The only thing a cigarette does - is make you feel like you dont need a cigarette anymore"

    congratulations

Thank you. That means alot. I would light up a cigarette, sometimes WHILE I went for a walk, and everytime I would think, MAN! I just wanna quit! And here I am! Thanks, everyone!
