Breakfast Ideas

Anybody have some quick, on the go breakfast ideas? I'm really bad about stopping by McDonald's on my way to work to get a fruit and yogurt parfait since I never seem to get up early enough to take a shower, straighten my hair, put on makeup, get dressed, AND have breakfast lol.. Everybody I work with suggests grapefruit or oatmeal, but no matter how many times I've tried them I am just not a fan of the stuff.

  • I love the Dannon Light n fit greek yogurts. Only 80 calories, and put a banana with it. Then I get my protein, dairy, fruit. If I am extra hungry, I throw in a whole wheat bagel with greek yogurt cream cheese spread.

High fiber english muffin or bread of your choosing, sliced deli ham or turkey, sliced cheese (reduced fat if you prefer, but please don't eat fat-free cheese, blech) - toast bread, make sammy, nuke until cheese is melty and meat is warmed through (20 seconds is usually plenty).

Make your own yogurt parfait with greek yogurt, fruit of your choosing (berries are good), and a tablespoon or so of granola.

Scrambled egg on toast. Not much more description needed  . (I prefer over easy, but that's not the most portable  )

Protein or granola bar (pick one with a decent fiber and/or protein content for maximum satiety. I like Kind bars).

Make egg cups on the weekends and put in the fridge, and nuke daily as needed. 8-12 eggs (or sub all or part with egg whites/beaters if you prefer), shredded cheese, bacon or ham or sausage, veggies (in whatever combo you prefer), dump into 12 well-sprayed muffin tins, baked at 350 for about 20-25 minutes or until set in the center.

Smoothie/protein shake - I couldn't even begin to give you recipes, they're everywhere  .

You can always add a side of a piece of fruit to any of those (or anything else), too - most fruits are pretty grab and go.

I've been cooking up a few days or week's worth of breakfast stuff so I can grab and go in the mornings. I'll have eggs, bacon, sausage, cheese, etc., already portioned out and tracked... Then I just grab that and a tortilla or bread, head to work, and throw it in the nuker for a minute.

Also, unless it's a time/money thing, the fruit and yogurt parfait at McD's isn't a terrible choice at all. A little high on carbs when you compare to fat/protein so it wouldn't fit MY macros too well, but a 150 calorie breakfast is more than reasonable if it fills you up and fits your day.

Ohh, pre-portioned breakfast burritos...I should start doing that, that sounds yummy.

because I have braces, and it's such a hassle to eat, currently my ideal breakfast consists in 1 banana, 1 apple and 1 small yogurt, all blended :D it's so delicious and easy to eat!

You have had a lot of great suggestions already!! I don't have a whole lot to add. Grab n' go stuff works. Or setting aside say, 7-15 minutes (if possible) to enjoy breakfast before you leave the house.

I am not a grapefruit or oatmeal fan either. Both are just meh! I do really like my version of refrigerator oats. I just stick about 4-6 oz of plain Greek yogurt in a container with a lid along with a handful of thawed frozen fruit (berries, peaches, whatever), 1/8 cup quick oats and maybe some ground flaxseed...in the morning, mix and eat cold...it is surprisingly good and different. Give it a try! Some people add liquid to that, and more oats, but this makes the consistency my husband and I prefer. For more protein you can add nuts too.

I think routine is a huge part of it. If you have 2-3 go to breakfasts that take less than 5 minutes to prepare, and you're in the habit of making them, you just get on a roll and becomes as natural to you as straightening your hair or brushing your teeth...just part of the "getting ready for work" thing.

I always have canola spray, a small frying pan and turner out and ready to go. So even if I am in a big rush, I can cook up a disc of egg (with or without spinach in it) and toast a mini size (fajita) tortilla along with it, add a dollop of southwest/chipotle ranch dressing to it and I've got an egg taco that keeps me full until lunchtime. That takes less than 5 minutes to prepare.

I would definitely try to get out of that fast food breakfast habit though...it's not inherently 'bad' but I think there's just too much quick & easy delicious stuff you can make at home to waste money on that, not to mention some of the added sugar, salt, etc. (and yes I do like and eat fast food occasionally, I promise I'm not one of those super anti-fast food people!) Also, I'd imagine sometimes you spend more time waiting in line to pay and receive the food than you would spend preparing an actual homemade breakfast!!

Also, if you really like the fruit & yogurt parfaits...make ahead as others have suggested. If you eat it at work, you could even bring a little container of granola to mix into pre-made Greek yogurt with fruit on the bottom. Super easy.

Measure everything the night before. Store dry ingredients in a ziplock bag. Dump together & stir

    Greek (or regular yogurt)
    1/4 C Frozen raspberries
    3/4 C Kashi GoLean
    1 Tbl slivered almonds

Good protein count, healthy fats, and really decent fiber counts. Keeps me full all morning.

Up until recently, I was TERRIBLE about eating breakfast! I've gotten much better at it as of late.

    Ideas -
Bagel & Peanut Butter - I use Whole Grain Bagels with lots of Fiber. I also use peanut butter with no added sugar (Kirkland Brand) and actually plan on making my own soon, once I've gone through the Kirkland Brand. Toss it in the toaster before you head out the door. I've been known to keep peanut butter at my office.

Pre-Made Fruit Bowls - On the weekend, chop up and portion our fresh fruit.

Bacon - While its not my favorite, I have been known to do the microwave bacon from time to time when I want the "hot breakfast". Toss in some hardboiled eggs and you have eggs and bacon in no time.

Thanks for your suggestions everybody! It's not that i especially love the fruit and yogurt parfait, but it's the quickest and least calorie consuming breakfast on my way to work every morning lol. I've got some great ideas to try so far, but by all means keep posting! The more ideas the better :)
