Hip pain from jogging

Over the last couple of weeks I'm noticing increased pain in my hip after jogging. Anyone else have this? I'm assuming it's probably tendinitis. What have you guys done to get over it quickly? I don't want to stop, I'm just starting to get good at it.

  • I asked this same question recently and people suggested I do more squats to build lower body strength and do the pigeon pose stretch ( http://brigiddineen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/pigeon_pose.jpg ) as part of my post run stretching. The past couple weeks I've been doing squats 3 times a week (5x5 strong lifts routine) and cardio 6 days a week (30 minutes on strength days, 45-60 on off days) and have experienced no more in my hips.

    You probably need new shoes.

    Try a foam roller too.

I have similar problems and have found Yoga and some specific hip stretches help massively, if it gets unbearable get it checked out but it's probably due to flexibility problems.
  • I struggle with hip pain when I start increasing my long runs over 10 miles. This training cycle I have incorporated more stretching, yoga and leg lifts and I have have avoided any problem so far. If running is all I do, then I have problems with my hip. Good luck!

If you want running to be a major part of your fitness program, I have two suggestions:

    1) get fitted for real running shoes at a running specialty store

    2) spend some time with a coach who can help you with your form and also setting up a program that has proper warmup, cooldown, and recovery.

Running with the wrong shoes, form problems, and inadequate recovery will result in injuries and frustration.

I've been through a lot of hip pain last year. It took months to get over it but what helped the most was regular hip & glute strength exercises and stretching. And I had an imbalance in my hips that still exists today but it's slowly getting better. Hard to say exactly what's causing your issue without knowing more info but maybe get a professional to look at it first.

As far as therapy exercises look up "dead butt syndrome" to find some things to do. I suspect that may be a cause here.

    Here's what I typically do (2-3x a week):
    Clamshells w/resistance band
    Side leg lifts w/band
    Monster walk w/band
    Fire hydrants
    Single leg squat
    Single leg deadlifts
    Hip hikes on a stair
    Bridges w/stability ball

Once a week I do typical leg stuff in the gym like barbell squats, deadlifts, leg press, leg extension, hamstring curls, and abductor/adductor machines. Before each run I do the lunge matrix to warmup (Google it). And lots of hip swings front to back and side to side. After the run lots of stretching. And I stretch my hip flexors every day (they are really tight).

It more than likely is your shoes. Go to a RUNNING store (not one of those sports stores like D!cks) and get fitted for shoes. My husband was having hip pain when he was running and went to get fitted and found out he was in the completely wrong shoes.

I have had hip pain in the past (primarily in my hip flexor) and with some increased stretching to improve my flexibility in my hip AND some new shoes, it has gone away completely.

I had someone analyze my gait and it turned out I was pronating (also "caused" by my almost completely flat feet) , so I needed to get motion control/stability shoes to aid with that.
