Protein Drink Mix Question?

I am not a bodybuilder and have no intentions to be, but I do cardio work-outs 4-5 times a week, and would like to repair my muscles. I have bought a protein drink mix, and was thinking of drinking it for my breakfast on the mornings I work out. I was also going to make my husband a drink, but he doesnt exercise. There is 150 calories in 1 scoop. If he doesnt exercise, would this drink have any advantages for him? And my understanding is, it builds lean muscle mass...so it would help me burn more calories during my workouts if I drink this to build lean muscle? Am I correct? This is all kinda confusing. I dont want to be drinking this stuff, if its going to make me big and bulky. Thanks for any responses :)

  • Meganlynn, just like you're not trying to be a bodybuilder, I'm not trying to be a nutritionist acting like I know exactly what protein shakes do, but you are correct in the fact that you will benefit drinking both before and/or after a good workout. I drink a protein shake before I head to the Y where most of the time I'm doing a combination of strength training and cardio. I think drink one on the drive home, like you said to help with muscle repair. Plus, there is the added benefit of keeping you fuller longer and somewhat curbing appetite. I'm thinking it probably won't do your husband any good to drink them unless he is not getting his daily protein from other foods. If he is not very active, it may just be adding extra calories to his diet. If you read most protein drinks, they say 'in order to build muscle mass or for use with weight loss'. Unless you're drinking one of those creatine or mass builders, you'll have nothing to worry about!

    VeggieCarrie is exactly right. If your husband doesn't exercise, protein shakes won't do him much good and would just be extra calories in his diet. You won't get big and bulky from drinking protein shakes, especially if you're not doing any strength or weight training, but they will help repair your muscles after a workout. If you're just doing cardio workouts, you might not even really need a protein shake if you're already getting enough protein in your diet already. A shake for breakfast will give your metabolism a bit of a kickstart, and that's never a bad thing!
