I'm running!

I've always hated running, despised it and joked about how much i hated it. When i played high school football i tolerated the sprints, but still hated it...and if distance running was required i would freak. Once when we were told to run for 10 minutes i faked being sick to get out of it!
Since then, knowing that running is a sign of being in good shape, i have tried to start running but would find reasons to stop. Knees hurt, too hot, too cold, too many hills, etc. All the while in the back of my mind i did wish i was a runner.
Well, 7 weeks ago i started C25K and survived the first week some how. On the 2nd week i thought i was going to die, or at least i was wishing i would die while suffering through a couple of minutes of running. Week 3 i said to myself, "this is impossible!" but something in me kept me going.
Well, tonight i begin week 7 which is 3 days of 25 minute runs AFTER completing my first 25 minute run on Sunday night! And to top it off when i got home i told my wife that i'm actually enjoying the running. I'm in shock about this!
But you know what? I feel great! I still have a lot of weight to drop but i feel like i'm in the best shape in a long time and i'm doing things i never have done before at the age of 39! Who woulda thunk it? Not me!

And for the record, MFP has been a great, great, GREAT tool to help me get over the wall when my weight loss stalled for 3 months!

great job, & i'm on wk 3 myself. I took up running almost 2 years ago, never thought I would love it either. Unfortunately I'm starting back over due to a broken foot, shoulder injury. But it's just something freeing about running....Keep up the great work
  • I love stories like yours!!
    Bravo!!!!! Well done!
  • Congrats!! I am trying (and I really mean trying) to start running. I walk mostly but run in between as long as I can. I'm like u, I have always joked about running (saying i only run when a dog is chasing me) but I have always secretly wanted to be a runner. Ur story is inspiration. thanx for sharing.!

I can totally relate. I hated running since I was in boot camp and now I love it. I've taken to running on my treadmill on my rest days from weight training. I usually do a quick 20 minutes on days I lift just to get my heart rate up, but the other days I put on a sauna belt and do the 40 minute "Canyon Run". An Ipod makes a world of difference. Make a playlist of your favorite fast songs and you forget that your running and you just let your feet land with the beat.

After I'm done I want to hug my treadmill!
  • This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing. I've just heard about the C25k program and I am definitely going to try it. I just recently wrote a blog about this same issue, except it had to do with me faking to be a runner:) Good luck, you've motivated me!
  • I'm on week 2 day 2, the first 3 min my legs were killing me ... then it was like i was in a "zone" and it went by superfast!

There are a lot of great podcasts out there for the C25K program.

Yay! How wonderful. :) My brother is thinking about starting running too - I should hook him up with MFP. Congrats - very proud and happy for you!
