Who still believes the Glucosamine myth??

I'd read a lot about this and so stopped wasting my money a couple of years ago.

Glucosamine Helps Your Joints <-Myth
...if you started taking glucosamine supplements preventatively or because your joints hurt, stop. Save your cash. Compared with a placebo, research has shown, glucosamine, chondroitin, and their combination don’t reduce joint pain, nor do they prevent osteoarthritis.

What does? Because researchers don’t fully understand the cause of osteoarthritis, they can’t detail a surefire prevention method. If you already have joint pain, the Arthritis Foundation suggests staying active and maintaining a healthy BMI are the best ways to relieve joint pain. “Losing one pound can take four pounds of pressure off your knee joints,” they write. And “strong muscles protect joints.”

    I'm a sceptic, generally.

I'm currently taking glucosamine and chondroitin on Drs orders for three months to see if it reduces the joint pain that I get from my hypermobility.

So far i'm not sure tht it's helping, but i'll finish the trial period and see it it gets worse after i stop before taking a decision myself.

My dog gets glucosamine & chonoditrin every day. He's a German shepherd and it does seem to be helping him with his hips.

As for myself, I don't have / am not predisposed to joint issues, so why would I take it?

Interesting because a procebo wouldn't work on the dog ..

I have been taking glucosamine for about 3 months probably, I haven't noticed any big changes. I have knee pain that I am working on with a physical therapist. I don't think I will buy another bottle.. but glucosamine works for my cat! She has an old injury in a back leg that makes her limp and the changes when we started were really amazing, she has been on it for about 4 years, no limp and she jumps like crazy.

I started taking it a couple of years ago for my knees...I went through an entire bottle with no change in the way my knees felt so I never purchased another bottle. Subsequently I lost weight and my knees feel a lot better....though I do have some tendonitis that flares up from time to time which is when I just reach for the Aleve.

I have an arthritic cat and a dog with a luxating patella who get glucosamine. It works like a charm. I have lateral distoid meniscus and it helps me.

Thanks .. That's almost my experience too.....

I also hyper extended my knee once (playing Squash) and went to a Physio .. he said that knees are badly designed !! but that mine should be better in 6 weeks time with Rest etc... He was right . Took nowt, had no mystical healing hands (or magic pills or Pretty coloured cellotape  ). Just time.. BUT that's not going to work for all people and all injuries... I'm convinced that I did the right thing and sought out the advice of a Sports Physio.

Reducing saicylate helped my joints. I used to use walking sticks and walked with my eyes down so as not to trip, found it hard to breath as was racked with pain everywhere which got worse with aspirin. Now I am pain free, can breath and walk and generally enjoy life.

I understand (but have no knowledge of such things!!) that Joints are good for your joints too..... There's a lot of research being done on the chemicals, and some looks very promising.

It worked for me, and it wasn't the placebo effect. I was a total non-believer. After having my son my joints were wrecked, I couldn't stand up if I sat down in the middle of a room, I literally had to crawl to the sofa and pull myself up. My husband made me take glucosamine for two weeks, I rolled my eyes. After two weeks I was utterly healed.
Our dog has knee problems and when he's bad we give him glucosamine and definitely stops him limping.

haha, I have had the same experience with my older GSD. He has been diagnosed with mild arthritis in his knee and is getting older. He was getting to the point where he would avoid sitting if he didn't have to and when he did he sat carefully (we stopped giving him the sit command). I started giving him Glucosamine and chondritan supplement. I knew it worked when he came up next to me and sat on his own.

One big issue with glucosamine is that it is not regulated (for humans or animal). 1000mgs supplements may or may not actually contain that. My vet explained that the stuff they offered (for $$$) in their clinic isn't even proven to be at that strength.

Yup, I just switched him to a liquid glucosamine supplement because we kept finding the pills under the bed, couch, rug, you name it... And they don't do much good there...
