Up my calories or stay?

I joined mfp a couple of days ago. Before this I was using a journal and tracking my calories and tried to stay around 1800 calories. MFP is recommending 1600. I've felt pretty hungry on only 1600. When I was at 1800 I felt fine, the only reason I wasn't losing is because I ended up going over my calories a lot. Should I stay at 1600 or should I go up to 1800?
