So, since I lack any real space to start a garden, I've been taking things like tea jugs, milk jugs, etc, and cutting them in half and placing them in my window sills with potting soil. Maybe one or two seeds in each. I have one which has 9 seeds in it (3 pepper plants, 3 bean plants, and 3 tomato plants) which I'm pretty sure are going to have to get moved once the seeds get started.

Does this sound ok? Do I need to consider anything special? I'm just looking to grow some veggies that will help take some pain out of my food budget! I'm completely new to gardening and I just started doing this a few days ago.

Make sure you have holes for drainage. Soil can mold if you keep it too wet without drainage.
Jugs work, but you can get clay pots for cheap too.
Plenty of light and yes, you will have to separate those veggies when they start growing.
I am growing: chives, sage, rosemary. thyme. oregano, garlic, parsley, and basil in my window. It is great!!! Fresh and cheap!!!
Good luck farmer msarro. Enjoy. Make sure you give those tomatoes lots of room and put outside for tons of light. Beans too-most are vine.

Tomatoes need lots of light to thrive. As soon as the stalks on those pepper, bean and tomato plants are 3 or 4 inches tall, separate them into their own containers (one container for each kind of plant. Get a bigger container so that the plants will have room to grow, and make sure the pots have good drainage so the roots of the plants won't rot.

Yep. Sounds like most of the other folks have you covered. Most summers, I like to plant tomatoes (at least). Last year, I only had one husky cherry tomato on my deck in a large container. I agree with the others (and you)....I think that your veggies will be fine to start in your containers, but I think you'll need something bigger once your plants are established. You will see your plants growing, then it seems like they've stopped. If/when they get there, they've run out of room. Try repotting to give them more room. GL. I love being able make most of my salad off of my porch....YUM.:flowerforyou:

you should check out square foot gardening. My friend teaches this method at the local community college here, she is really into gardening and swears by this method, it doesn't require much space or even skill, it is supposed to be easy and no weeds.
