Adjusting the MFP Exercise Calories

I know MFP gives too many calories for exercise. So when I log exercise in MFP, I cut the amount it says I burned in half and log that number. So if I swam "freestyle mild/moderate pace" for 1 hour, instead of logging the 800 calories MFP says I burned, I log 400.
I know a heart rate monitor is best for calculating, but I'm not buying one right now.
So, I'm curious to know how many calories you guys shave off of the MFP calculator or what you do to get a semi-accurate number in there.
Thanks!

Measure using a HRM once or twice while doing the activity. Then you can get a ballpark conversion factor. I'm sure you can borrow one from someone.0
