Before joining in anybody's Cinco de Mayo celebrations, I first question whether the person knows what it is, and second, why are they celebrating it.
(People in Mexico don't even celebrate it.)0 -

THIS. It's basically an American holiday to party with Mexican food and tequila.
Which is just silly - like you need an excuse to party with Mexican food and tequilla
:drinker:0 -
I am MexiCan. I'd say all of you should quit while your ahead and remember you have the right to remain silent, and what ever you say, can and will be used against you in MFP forums.
"The Battle of the Puebla" is celebrated in Mexico, just out side of Mexico City ( where the battle took place) There is a huge festival and parades. So you should stick to what you know before you make uneducated guesses. BTW it is not our independence day either.0 -

Nice! I was unaware Mexico had a celebration on the site. I just know that right across the border, they don't.
And then as a fellow Mexican-American, I always wonder why anybody in America would celebrate it.0 -

YES. It is a huge celebration in that state. It is one of the most celebrated Mexican pride celebrations for sure. It is celebrated on the California border as well. There is a huge Mexican population so in T.J. and all of California celebrate it.
No offense to the OP, and their American version of Mexican food, but one would question WHY you would be celebrating a holiday that has nothing to do with your culture. (I believe- that is what some one who posted above asked). Its a legit question.
I however invite all my friends of any culture to celebrate with me and mine, but I educate them as to why we celebrate Cinco De Mayo and that its not just a "taco and tequila day", however we celebrate with real Mexican culture food, like ceviche', tacos de vapor, and Birria de chivo and tostadas de querritos. Pastel de Tres Leches'
. You might like those recipes, you should google them.0 -

The same reason we celebrate St. Patrick's day - it's just an excuse to party (tho again, I reiterate, I personally rarely need an excuse).
I'll agree with you on "Americanized" Mexican food though. My SIL (whose mother is from Mexico and learned how to make TRUE Mexican food) has made meals that about killed me because I couldn't stop gorging myself on the deliciousness.0 -

People in the US (non Mexican) celebrate it so they can just party. And nothing wrong with partying. But claiming they are actually celebrating Cinco de Mayo (when most have no idea where it happened and what actually happened) is just a front.
You know places like Chevy's, Don Pablo's and Chipotle will be advertising "specials" for that day.:drinker:
