best combo of cardio/weight training? (To Lose 40lbs)

I have read tons and tons of posts and still can't really answer this question. What I've gathered is that if all you do is cardio then you will lose weight faster but not be toned but just a smaller version of yourself. Whereas strength training can help you lose weight but it might be a slower process?? (All this give your diet is on point of course).
Id like to lose 35-40 pounds so I was thinking for the first 20 I should focus on cardio and then for the last half incorporate strength training. Does that sound right? Or should I start weight lifting now? If so how much time do you a lot to each? If you only have 3-4 days a week to workout how do you split it up? Maybe like 30 min cardio, 30 min strength? Or one day cardio one day strength?
I work 2 jobs (70 hours a week) so I can't go to the gym every single day so id like to maximize the time I do spend there.
Thanks for any advice!!

Remember that strength training increases your metabolism!! I recommend a combo of both from the beginning

I did cardio for my first 35 lbs, then stopped that and do strength training for my last 35 lbs. Not because I thought this was the best workout for me but because I felt like I was stalling doing cardio and needed to change things up. That's when I found Stronglifts. I do that 3 times a weeks and my husband and I play raquetteball once a week. That's my only cardio and it works for me.

working two jobs does make it a little hard.

I'm not an expert but this time around on my weight loss journey which has worked for me was only cardio. I started working out and changed my eating habits Sept 24th 2013 and today, I'm 87 lbs lighter. I'm not a smaller version of myself but I also don't have a heavy weight boxers body. I'm comfortably slim.

so take it for what it's worth start with cardio and then incorporate weights. but to build muscle you need to eat more (surplus) and you are trying to lose weight. so it might be counter active, unless by losing weight you meant become fit. then eating more and lifting weights might suit you better than cardio.

I only do cardio. I run 6.2 miles a day during the week and run 5.2 miles on my off days sat and sunday.

Well, I've lost close to 40, and I have done both all along. I do weights three day per week, and walking most every day.

My avatar is a 30 lb weight loss in about 4 months with all weights, and zero cardio.

Regardless of whether or not your do cardio... you should definitely do weights. Cardio can help get you there faster, but weights will help you keep your muscle.
