"Food triangle"

Hi
I am a student in secondary school for the subject home science.
In the Flemish part of Belgium we use this "food triangle" to guide children and adults into eating healthy and making right decisions.

TOP OF TRIANGLE
"Everything else"
Fat (e.g. butter, margarine...) (consider it - not to much!)
Dairy or substitutes for dairy (3 - 4 glasses; 1 - 2 slices cheese) | Meat, fish, eggs, meat replacers (75 - 100 grams)
Vegetables (300 grams) | Fruit (2 - 3 pieces)
Cereal products (5 to 12 slices of brown bread) and potatoes (3 to 5 pieces, boiled)
Water (1.5 l a day)
Move (adults: min. 30 minutes; children: min. 60 minutes)
BOTTOM OF TRIANGLE
Some notes: bread and potatoes are really important to us

In the US, we have what's called MyPlate. Check out choosemyplate.gov. School lunch programs are based on it.
When I was your age, we had the "four food groups" (in the 80s) and then we had the food pyramid. There has always been some controversy here about whether or not the suggested foods are healthy. For example, google "ketchup as a vegetable" and you'll find some fun research to add to your project.

Our old food pyramid, which we had until recently and is what I learned in school, is almost exactly the same. The main objections, as I recall, were that it emphasized grains so much and made no distinction between whole grains and others, and that it didn't emphasis vegetables enough. Now we have My Plate, I guess, plus the modified version of the pyramid shown above.

I sometimes substitute in the school kitchen. I know there is a lot of pre-planning and record keeping involved now in order to meet federal government guidelines. The food for the most part is processed however and comes from giant vendors that supply lots of institutions. Kind of discouraging.
So, about a week ago I was chatting with the head cook and asked her specifically which federal guidelines she MUST follow in order to stay compliant. She said that the bottom line was calories, rather than the nutritional breakdown. Granted they are supposed to offer a fruit, a vegetable, a grain and a protein source at each meal, but there is some wiggle room there. For instance, the fruits and vegetables are offered via a salad bar and although the kids are encouraged to take at least one serving, no one can make them eat it. There is a tremendous amount of waste by the way.
After she told me that following calorie guidelines I asked her what those guidelines were. She said 600 for K-6 and 800 for 7-12th graders for the noon meal. This school also provides an afternoon fruit snack in the classroom for K-6.
There is also a federal grant available for an after school snack. Unfortunately, IMO, all these snacks are pre-packaged items from the large food vendors. I think most of the snacks run between 100 and 250 calories. Some days they are given 2 snack items in order to meet the guidelines. I am pretty sure that the after school snacks program has to include certain macros/micros more than calorie goals.
Regarding the heavy load of grains on the food pyramid, I wonder if the goal is B vitamins and the need to eat more grains in order to obtain a correct daily amount?0 -

That sounds pretty much like the food pyramid. Which is what I learned in school. Now, they use 'my plate' in the US. Which is pretty much like... a plate to make sure you eat each food group. "Protein", "Fruit", "Dairy", etc
They even sell plates for kids now that have a section for each.0
