P90X without P90X nutrition?

I, like most of us here, have dieted on and off my entire life and have finally found something that is working for me. I ordered P90X to start an exercise regime and it comes with what it insists is a completely necessary nutrition guide. I am already counting calories and preplanning meals, do I really have to do their diet? I really just want to stick with mine. Their's just looks way to complicated and I'm scared I'll get frustrated and quit. Anyone having success and NOT following their nutrition guide?

Just make sure you eat enough to have the energy and nutrition to recover from the workouts. I lost did pretty well in 2 months of P90X following my own with the help of calorie counting on this site.

I did the P90X for 6 weeks until I just got frustrated with weight gain! I didn't follow the diet but wasn't counting calories either and had slow weight loss with my regular workouts. Since starting MFP I am strictly counting calories and have lost weight nicely. I think you will be ok if you remember they wayyyyy overestimate the calorie burn in their ads. I wore my HRM the other day and did cardio x and it was only 430 calories, not the 600-900 that they advertise. I enjoyed the workouts and plan to do the whole 90 days when I have reached my weight loss goal. It is a great workout. Good luck and if you count your calories you will do great.

The P90X nutrition guide was basically designed to help people who do not have a good knowledge base of food and nutrition. The different phases are there to show us the effects of both carbs and proteins on our energy levels and to also show us that even though the macronutrient levels are changed, the calories aren't...it helps us to find what ratio would work best for us. Most people do not follow the nutrition guide stricty for the entire time. I did it strictly for about 60 days and then basically stuck with the same calorie amount and a ratio of 55% carbs, 30% protein, and 15% fat which works best to provide me with the energy I need to workout.

That being said, I think that if you watch what you eat and make sure to eat as clean as possible sticking within your calorie limits, you should be fine. I personally also believe that the ratios are important, but I also firmly believe that this is individual based on your own body. No diet is "one size fits all" because I am sure that there are people out there who eat completely different from me yet are on the same health and fitness level as me.

I am doing a hybrid P90X/Turbo Kick program right now that I made myself...and I eat what MFP says to eat (1280 calories) plus most of my exercise calories...which is actually pretty darn close to the 1800 that P90X puts me at in their guide.

Don't let the nutrition plan freak you out. It's actually not as hard as it looks, cause you can do it on here by simply manually changing the ratios of nutrients and adding your own foods to the diary that add up to those goals. I love some of the recipes and have them all the time. I would calculate the calories of each recipe on here, though, because I found that some of the nutrition facts listed on recipes are incorrect (mainly cause we don't know what brands of foods the authors are using!).

During my first few rounds I followed the Nutrition Guide diligently. Through trial and error I tweaked it to my needs. Now, I try to stay as Primal as possible at a 55% protein, 25% carbs (from veggies & fruits, no grains, sugars, flour, etc) & 20% fat ratio. I try to keep carbs between 50-100g's per day which isn't easy at 250 lbs. I don't do carbs well.
