Is there a certain time frame you have to burn excess calories before they are stored as fat?

Absolutely not. Weight loss is just eating fewer calories than you burn in a day. Your body burns calories by just being alive (basal metabolic rate or BMR), say that amount is 1650 calories a day. That means that you will burn 1650 calories if you sit on the couch watching Breaking Bad all day. Any activity burns more calories than you are already burning, which you can eat those calories back.
