I work long hours, not getting home until 6pm most nights. I pre make meals so I can be done of dinner by 7pm. I get to my workout at 8ish and finish at 9ish. Should I be having an after workout shake that late? I go straight home, shower and bed by 11pm at the latest. It just feels way too late to be having one.

If it is the latter you can ditch the shake and just go with a simple glass of chocolate milk. Many studies recently have been showing the simple drink is the perfect after workout drink.0 -
Unless you are a gremlin it is never to late.
If it fits your calories you're doing fine. I usually eat dinner after the gym so I eat around 9ish 4 days a week.0 -
I don't do shakes as a meal replacement unless I absolutely have to. I'm usually at my daily calorie count when I finish my dinner. However, then I workout and burn another 500-1000 calories so i'm not worried about meeting or going over my daily calories. Maybe a glass of milk will be enough...0

but if OP is lifting heavy (are you, op?), then i dont think the chocolate milk would have the proper amount of proteins for recovery.
i work out at night too, and always have my shake...whether its 10pm or midnight.
OP if youre that concerned about it, you can always have your shake in the morning, as that is still well within the timeframe considered "post workout".0 -

Check out some of the studies how it is more beneficial than most of the more expensive shakes and drinks.0 -
Remember there are different types of protein shakes, two of the major ones are: Whey and Casein.
Many people that lift, drink Casein before bed, which slowly releases protein while you sleep.
If your MACROS allow it, I'd recommend you try Casein at night. I actuallly blend Casein and Whey. After my workout, I do morning btw, I drink a 2/3 Whey, 1/3 Casein shake. While at night, right before bed, I drink a 2/3 Casein and 1/3 Whey shake.
Just a heads up, many Casein mixes are well...acquired tastes. Kind of a chalky flavor, but in time, they go down nice and easy.0 -
