Dumb question about macros

Should I be trying to reach each of my macros, or should I just try to stay below my daily allowance?
I rarely have difficulty reaching my protein level, but the others vary (I'm new to counting calories so I'm still figuring out what foods have too much sodium, sugar etc.)

Your macros should be treated as minimums. Macros also have caloric value, so ideally, you'll reach both macro and calorie targets fairly closely. Sugar and sodium are micros. If you're eating a balanced diet and don't have a medical condition that requires monitoring those, ignore them. (I do occasionally peek at sodium levels if I'm getting water retention).0

Your Fat and Protein goals should be treated as minimums, while your carbohydrate goal should be treated as a maximum.0
