Fats - Healthy vs. Unhealthy

I am going over the recommended fat almost every day. However, most of my fat is healthy - avocados, nuts, etc.

The iphone app breaks down the fats into types (Saturated, Polyunsaturated, Trans, etc.) but I don't know how to separate them online. Any suggestions?

Is anyone else going over their fat grams everyday through healthy fats? Is this something I should modify or is it healthy to continue going over the fats - as long as they are healthy?

Thanks!

  • You can change your Dairy settings so those appear on your Food tab screen when you add your foods.

I stay under. The nuts will make me nuts. I love them, same with avocados. But I stay under. They eat up way too many of my calories (9 calories in a gram of fat vs. 4 calories in a gram of protein and carbs).

It's tough since I love those foods so much, but I got rid of the nuts all together and will do my avocado as a meal (lunch) two or three times a week.

Healthy fat is still fat. The best diets are well balanced between carbs, protein and fat. If you're only going over by a little, it's probably fine, but if it's going over by a lot, you should reconsider your choices. Make sure you weight/measure everything - I buy almonds in bulk and then make my own 100 calorie snack packs - 18g of almonds is about 100 calories. This makes it easy to limit how much I eat. I use olive oil when cooking, but use it sparingly. I wil weight out and only use 25-35 grams of avocado at once. It's way too easy to eat a whole avocado otherwise - which is too much at one time!

One warning - you can't really depend on the breakdown in this database between the types of fat - trans/mono/saturated/etc. Many food labels don't have the breakdown and so many (Probably most!) food items don't have accurate nutrition info when it comes to the breakdown of fat on this website. You're better off just watching your overall fat total and making sure most of it is coming from healthy sources.
