Were they right, or were they wrong?

This was posted by CNN this morning. Was the magazine right to ask this woman to cover up in her "after" photo? Or were they just being hateful jerks? What do you guys think.

This morning both the woman and the editor-at-large were on the Today Show. The editor explained that the writer was freelance and gave the woman the wrong information when asking her to cover up. The woman will be in a future Shape magazine article (in her bikini) along with other women showing and talking about losing a large amount of weight.

Awesome! That's good to know! I think she did a fantastic job! She deserves a little recognition, and to help motivate others who need to lose large sums of weight0

I think that the comment that "realism doesn't sell magazines" is on point, sadly. Good for her for sticking to her guns. Sad world.

Unfortunately so true0

And imagine how much money and energy we'd free up to spend on other things.0

So Shape decided to backpedal and try to do damage control and I still think it's a crap magazine.
ET correct magazine title. Self, Shape, it doesn't matter. None of them are really helpful to women.0 -

I wouldnt say hateful jerks. If so, then you would have to say the same about the MFP mods.
Why are some pics allowed (many in bras and panties) and others are not???
If its not attractive its a success story, but if its attractive its pornography?
Hypocrisy comes to mind, not really being jerks.
ETA: Why wouldnt Shape magazine want to show the REALITY of it? Then they wont have to worry about the fine print and say *results not typical (like in numerous other ads). There are plenty of threads asking about extra / loose skin after weight loss. This was also an opportunity Shape magazine missed out on to address those issues and help other people who have those concerns.0 -

Pretty much. Backpedal and throw the freelance writer under the bus to make it look like the actual magazine had nothing to do with it. It was a very awkward segment to watch.0 -
Magazines perpetuate a certain aesthetic, and as was quoted (via social media) in the interview, "The image is realistic, but realism doesn't sell fitness."
I would love to see the reality, and all of us here are steeped in it via the Success Stories forum, but the people selling the magazine know that their readership are more interested in magic pills and miracle cures that don't exist... There's no room for saggy skin in that delusion.0
