Keeping Fresh Vegetables Fresh (almost)

Recently I read an old but interesting article at http://www.fitsugar.com/How-Keep-Fruits-Vegetables-Fresh-8633030

I would be interested in learning what tips others may have for making fresh veg/fruit last longer, also any thoughts on eating fresh veg compared to tinned veg. Are there some canned veggies that are definitely better purchased fresh?

Another article I read discusses the shelf-life of some fruit and veg, although I dont know how accurate this is and imagine may depend on a few environmental factors:

I am single and live alone so I was throwing out a lot of veggies. I bought some Debbie Myers fresh bags and containers and the work great. I got mine at bed bath and beyond. I think it was $32 for the bags and container set

I use the bags constantly. I'll have a flat of strawberries that would normally last less than a week, last for over a month. They have limitations. I don't like putting squash like zucchini in them since it traps the moisture they are constantly sweating out and cause them to go bad sooner. For them, I still use brown plastic bags. Overall though, they are a good investment and can be reused many times if they are properly cared for and stored after use.
