Please can someone explain

Hi can someone explain the net calorie thing on MFP and indicate whether my profile is where it should be

Credentials:-

6ft 3 inches
Light daily activity (I'm a sales guy so move around a bit. I haven't allowed the exercise in this part)
242 ibs

Have indicated 1ib a week weight loss

I have then indicated 4 workouts a week at 40 mins.

MFP has calculated 2920 calories as calories burned from normal activity and I should be eating 2420 calories a day ????

So I'm assuming if I stick to around 2500 cals a day my number for weight loss is correct and that is including it with my workouts too ??

MFP works at a deficit so you can eat exercise calories back.
I set my own goal - I used fitnessfrog website to calculate my tdee and then took 250 calories per .5lb week loss off it.

It isn't including your workouts. you add those in after.

How much do you want to lose? I've lost nearly 5 stone and generally I've had it set to 2lbs a week. If you think your calories are too high then change it to 2lbs a week.

The idea is that you are already eating at a deficit compared to how much your daily business burns off. If you do exercise you earn more calories still.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I've set to 1ib a week and want to lose 20 ibs this year. Hopefully by end of October as I'm going to Dubai and its my 42nd birthday so want to be in the best shape of my life. It''s slow with me however. Body holds water very easily.

You eat back your exercise calories, in addition to the 2400 calories you're already eating! Just be sure you don't double-count your on- the-job walking as exercise, as it's already included in 'light activity '. If you don't want to eat so much, set a more aggressive weight loss goal.

Sodium has a big effect on water retention.

SO that's nearly 3000 cals if I burn 300-400 cals on exercise. There is no way I'm consuming all that even on non workout days. I've lost about 3ibs in last 2 weeks

If you eat less, you will lose faster, so simply update your goals to. 2lb/week. I also would have trouble eating more than 2,000 calories of home-cooked foods.. Though it's really easy with drinks, snack foods, restaurants, or fast foods.

Hi. Yes I agree. These 2 weekends have included some wine and vodka consumption because of family/friend functions. However still tried to be careful on food. ALso to let you know I was drinking way too much daily for a long time so have cut out this from the daily regime !

Its been 2 weeks I've got back into it so I have lost circa 3 pounds. But its not spot on each week...never has been. I guess its the average you have to look at over the monrth ???

I could eat a little late say on a day and be 2ibs heavier next day. Had a bottle of wine last night. I was within my calories for day and had exercised but wa s2 ibs heavier this morning. Annoying !

You should eat back your exercise calories IF you set your activity level at sedentary, then manually add your workouts, which is what most people do. Also, be aware that MFP overestimates calories burned. When I had no other way to record calories, I tended to only log about 2/3 of the exercise that I actually did, then ate back all of those calories.

Hi I use a HRM and use a calories burnt calculator using my average hr and logging NET calories burnt as opposed to Gross calories

So have I understood it correctly that at about 2100 calories per day you've lost 3lb in a fortnight? I would continue as you are, tightening up accurate food-logging and enjoying an active lifestyle.

Personally I prefer to calculate my BMR using a Google search then following the link to Harris-Benedict to calculate TDEE and then deduct 10-20% of the calories to lose weight.

Set my goals manually on here then. Cannot be bothered to add in each exercise, some of which are greatly overestimated calorie burners on here.

I would say this is the general idea when you see your daily calorie recommendation and it's all ZOMG THATS SO MANY CALORIES. It helps us taper off whatever lifestyle got us to our current weight while still making progress and being successful. You're not doing this on an island but I think getting some good pounds off before your birthday sounds doable! Good luck

Drinking 1 bottle of wine a day and 1/4 bottle of vodka with a mixer on weekends is going to smash any calorie deficit that you had through the week really, or at least eat in to it a great deal!

Slow weight loss is the best because your body adjusts to the reduction. Slow loss reduces the likelihood of you bouncing back up. It also enables you to change your lifestyle and habits away from those which put the pounds on. I have been able to drop from 267 to 182 lbs. in two sets of attempts. Between each set, I was able to maintain the loss and was comfortable with the lifestyle changes. Much better than dropping quickly to have it bounce back up.

Let's add to all of that, if you are not recording the wine or vodka drinks OR even other drinks such as coffees with additives, you have a skewed picture of what you are needing to counter with exercise or food adjustments. I have done the week trip with friends where I consumed more alcohol than normal, but increased my walking to find when I got home the weight had gone up only 2 pounds. I was expecting about 5 lb. increase!

That is the consumption I USED to have prior to 2 weeks ago. My tolerance has gone down considerably since then

I have an addictive personality... If I get wasted on one day, I can quite easily do it 3-4 days on a trot. Not good.. Body became accustomed to it. Hate to imagine what it was doing to my insides !!!!

Well at least you've managed to kick the habit! Become addicted to weight lifting and counting your calories and macros! You'll feel great for it! Lol
