Denny's

Today is my husband's birthday. When he got up this morning, he declared he wanted to go to Denny's for his free birthday. Our youngest son would eat free, too. At first I was worried. I did my work out already, but tomorrow could be a big news weigh in for me and I don't want to blow it.
I was happy to see they have some "better for you" options on their Build Your Own Slam list. I picked turkey bacon, egg whites, wheat pancakes and grits. The grits were nasty, so I skipped those. I never will understand why restaurants in the south insist on serving watery grits. When done right, I will splurge on them, but these weren't worth the calories. I ate half of everything else and put strawberry jelly on my pancake instead of butter and syrup. With 2 cups of coffee with half and half and equal, it all came out to 322 calories. More than I usually have for breakfast, but much better than it could have been and don't feel at all like I cheated myself from a fun outing with the family.

Good for you making smart choices. Birthdays are a fact of life and you are absolutely right to enjoy them. I truly feel that this is a lifestyle change and to make it stick, you have to be able to enjoy special occasions. Bravo! (And really proud of you for deeming the grits not "calorie worthy". That is my biggest issue- "I paid for it, so I'm gonna eat it"- even if it's not that great.)0

I'm actually shocked at how few calories that is for a Denny's breakfast! I'm sure the big "issue" really is the sodium counts (as usual when eating out). And you mentioned that you normally eat fewer than 330 calories for breakfast? Most people should eat anywhere from 350-500 calories at breakfast (to jump start your metabolism and energy for the day!!0
