Shoe advice? Good tread + lightweight

I'm looking for something to use for simple hikes in the low desert and for various off road walks. I own some fivefingers and Saucony Peregrines. Important features include good tread and light weight/low profile. I like my Peregrines, but they are a little on the bulky side.

What footwear do you all like for this sort of activity?
