I'm not big fan of BL, but I am kind of sick of Kai continuing to re-live her 15 minutes of fame....

This show is SO messed up. I don't understand what positive impact it could possibly hope to have, either. I know a lot of people that got super discouraged when they started working out and couldn't lose those huge numbers or transform their bodies in twelve weeks, and it just drives me crazy. SO dangerous and SO nonsensical and if any trainer spoke to me that way, ever, I swear to god I'd walk right out of the gym.

    Yayyyy fatphobic bull****

I've never watched the show, don't care to really. Of course it is fake, staged and misrepresented through editing though, I mean people should realize that. Its television. This is not a surprise is it?

One thing I did enjoy about that article is the analogy to no network having the gaul to run a reality TV show called "Who is the biggest cancer survivor". The idea of turning health into a gameshow is pretty sick. Although it is entertainment so I'm not sure how much moral judgement I really want to cast on it.

    I'm with oxers!

Hell, walk out? That's nice of you. If someone started talking to me like that I'd be right up in their face in a second. I don't like being talk down to. Twelve weeks bah! It takes YEARS to get heavy. It doesn't happen in 12 weeks. How can you expect your poor body to just tear down overnight like that? That can't possibly be good for you! Sensible planning! Sensible diet! Sensible exercise! What's with the endless, useless quick fix?

"fatphobic bull****" defines Hollywood and possibly LA, my hometown.

it is a tv show! of course it is highly edited, dramatized and partially made up. my question is...if it was so horrific of an experience to go through...why not leave? from reading this article, you would think they were actually held against their will. I don't know kari's story, but it sounds like she stayed in spite of the Hell on earth she was being forced to suffer through. We all talk about personal responsibility. Ultimately, we are the only one's responsible for our own health.

I'm really surprised that none of them have had emergency gallbladder surgery during the filming. Rapid weight loss is a risk factor for gallstones.

they are all adults and can make their own choices and if they don't like what is going on they can walk away...but they don't...and why not...because they want the money.

They want the short lived fame, they want to lose the weight fast...

If they didn't want it they wouldn't sign up for it.

    Amen to this.

By the way, I watch the show. I'm a fan. For every one person the show makes feel bad about themselves, it inspires hundreds of others to reach outside of their comfort zone. If you're not mature enough to recognize that dramatics plays a role in TV, stop watching TV.

Can this even be called a show anymore? It's just a 2 hours commercial for Subway and whatever fitness equipment/supplement their advertisers are peddling.

    + 1.

Kai Hibbard. I hope to heck she donated her winnings to an eating disorder charity or some other body image movement since she's so disgusted for her part in making the impact. Editing cannot create some of the PITA moments that were Kai (least favorite contestant due to attitude long before I knew anything about her attitude after the show.) Yeah, I get that none of us would look awesome followed around and filmed for months. That's one reason I don't exchange my privacy and image for free training, lodging, and $25,000.

Does she really think the BL is the only reality show that cuts off contact with the outside world? Where's the outrage about Fear Factor and tons of other dumb shows that could arguably put people at risk? The day the BL sues a contestant for contract violation for quitting, I'll agree with her. Until then, [/  ]

I learned that the hard way. :(

I do not doubt that some of them suffer from gallbladder disease. You don't always need emergency surgery, though. It depends on the size of the gallstones. And then some are stubborn like me, and don't get the surgery. No insurance, so I just manage it. I, also, would not be surprised if they have it and haven't put two and two together - since it can also come from obesity, they might believe that they had it before the show.

In any case, I really, really hate the show. It is not healthy to lose that much weight that quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them went on to develop eating disorders as a result of the show.

As a result of their choices to sign up for and remain on the show.

So they didn't know the terms before signing up for the show and agreeing to compete for the money?
I highly doubt that all of the terms were not disclosed to them in a multi-page contract they had to sign *prior* to signing up for the show.
It's T.V., it's show business, it's about money and ratings, not some angelic altruism.

I'm not saying it's right. Hollywood just ain't right in many levels. But she didn't sign up for the very first season of the very first "reality" show without ever looking into the terms, right?

Indeed not. It wasn't even the first season of the Biggest Loser.

What is the point of posting this article now? I personally couldn't care less about this show, but no one made them do anything. Don't like it? Just walk away. She won and is now, years later talking about how "bad" the process is and whatnot.

agreed. I mean, I like watching the earlier seasons of The Biggest Loser when I work out becausethe weight loss and the contestants feel a little bit more genuine, so it is inspirational. However, I'm also a realist and understand what to expect in "normal" weight loss. But I'm so sick of hearing people complain about being on the show. I feel like every couple of months there's some new "expose" on the conditions of the ranch, but it always just sounds like any report from the set of a competition reality show.

it's probably just to ride the publicity wave surrounding the controversy of Rachel from the latest season when there was talk of her having an eating disorder and being too thin.

Wow crazy. It's sad that his knees are ruined. One thing I've always wondered is how the winners don't have tons of excess skin. Do they give them plastic surgery?

Sorry, last post on this, I swear. You know what show I absolutely love, but is canceled? Heavy. I think it was on A&E and it documented obsese people entering a sort of rehab for thier weight loss. They had to attend therapy, work out with personal trainers, and learn about nutrition. There were two people an episode that were partnered up. After 3 or 6 months they were sent back home and they checked back in halfway through and then at the end of the year. And it was substantial weight loss, but normal weight loss. They might lose 100 pounds but over a whole year and there was this balance of support, instruction, and self-sufficiency. It wasn't about money or competition or backstabbing, it was about getting their lives back in a healthy way.
